And as sooner or later everyone will have some type of electronic logs (or so I am told) no more "adjustments" to tighten up their logs.

All the e-logs we have seen so far can be edited with the exception of drive time .

Saddlesore--you log using the timezone of your domicile--so it doesn't change--so you only need the 34 actual hours--time zone YOU are in at time has no bearing

Thnx. Good to see someone paying attention.... and the rant still stands... I could have 50 elapsed hours doing a 34 hr reset ie: even tho I am unloaded Monday @ 6am local time my terminal time is 3am, so I wouldn't be off the reset (including the (2) 1 to 5 segments) until 5am terminal time Wends. sucky just sucky

    You do know the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. requirements don't go into effect until July 1 , don't you ?

And what I'd like to know is, just how is that going to help those of us who drive in the middle of the night?

What ever made you think people pushing for these regulations are interested in helping the driver ?

Ive posted this b4--but Ill do it again--the 1am-5am provisions is where the rules meet their FATAL flaw--the SCIENCE the FMCSA used to come to this conclusion dealt w/what was claimed to be sleep cycles(they have a fancier word)and how overnight hours were more dangerous--yada yada--So their idea was to get drivers on a more "normal" sleep pattern--(read-meaning days)....
So follow me for a sec here:
    Therein the FLAW:
If a driver starts @ 5am day one--under new rules that day will last a minimum of 11:45--11 driving+1/2break+@least1/4hr pre/post trip)--so on these days--day ends @5:45pm--next day starts 3:45am and so on--which within the 1st couple of days of restart--has the majority of drivers right back on overnights....
Now I am NOT naive either....and totally understand that trucking IS NOT that cookie cutter---but THE ONLY way their(Gov'ts)science works is to make the assumption that every driver--every day--will use their entire 14--thus putting said driver on regular cycle..again--strictly on paper..
BUT "on paper" is the ONLY thing the gov't was concerned with: Remember this rule change came out of a lawsuit over the last(20004)HOS rule change--and the ONLY thing FMSCA&DOT were interested in was:Avoiding a long court battle on:Had they addressed the Judges concerns regarding the original Plaintiffs arguments?..which this new rule DOES!
What I cannot understand is: While both OOIDA&the ATA&TLC--are at odds on what each group wants--the one thing THEY ALL AGREE ON is keeping the reset as it is CURRENTLY!
and IMHO-MY-non law degreed--non PHD accredited mind--is WHY is this(the constant backward movement in start times)thus basically creating PERMANENT SWING SHIFTS-ISN"T-the Oppositions MAIN ARGUMENT AGAINST the new rule? Using THIS argument---the Gov'ts answer to the original court question(driver safety and well being)is shot to H###!
Since there is a LOT of very good science(including the gov'ts own)on sleep cycles and why swing--or constantly changing patterns are dangerous! and of course running this original example of 11:45hrs per day out to it's natural conclusion(you do the math)--most drivers will be on an fully overnight sched by the 3d working shift...and right thru to the natural end @70hrs...then said driver will be forced to basically take 2 days off--to allow the body to get back into a more natural(sic)pattern???
I know I am generalizing BUT this is a court battle--and the only thing necessary is to create REASAONABLE DOUBT(although this isn't criminal AND THIS STANDARD DOES NOT APPLY)Ill use the term for basic understanding)
So herein lies MY PROBLEM w/this..........

So Now b4 everyone gets all political etc.....I AM well aware of everything going on behind the scenes---lobbyin---false claims of safety(from ALL sides)unions trying to get more divers hired--BIG companies needing more drivers to cover work--thus hiring more rookies and saving $$$$....
So I'd hope this discussion doesn't turn into that...
I am merely pointing out what IMHO is a bad argument and frankly one again IMHO ANY 1L could shoot holes in all day--yet I haven't seen it mentioned ANYWHERE--BUT--
When I did this in Lousville--with MANY(so-called)company execs and safety directors--and OOIDA&ATA&TCA staff--they almost all said--Hey WE NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS!
Food for thought? Sorry for the long post....
    Just my $.02
