13 Speed will take some getting used to. Your trainer will work with you. It's a favorite transmission of many drivers. You will learn it and you will love it if you ever have to go to a different transmission. I know I miss it for sure.

You will be with a trainer for however long the trainer feels you need it. It all depends on you. However, if you are taking more than 3-4 weeks to grasp the basics, then May will most likely cut you loose. I have seen guys solo out in 10 days and guys go with two to three trainers for over 4 weeks and get cut loose. It all depends on you.

May has no regional outside of the western 11 dry van division. Refer is all 48. No way around that.

Reginal is 11 Western States: Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.

    The West is all Mountains.

The 13 Speed Trans is the best, once you have one you will never want anything else and honestly, it's easy to drive. Yer not even shifting on 4 gears, just moving a lever .. Yer trainer will show you and you will pick it up in a couple days .. Don't worry about it.

If mountains scare you, then May might not be the best fit. You will get loads that go to the North West. Whenever I got a load to the Los Angeles area, I usually ended up going up the I-5 corridor into Oregon. Then getting a load that either went to PA or to the south. Whatever way you go out of the North West, you will go over mountains. If its the snow you are afraid of, then you should look into a carrier that runs the south. And to be honest, some of the worst winter weather I have come across in my short 4 years on the road has been in Nebraska, Iowa and Indiana.

Not really, they just close the road when it's too bad.

HaHa. I've driven across Wyoming MANY times when they didn't close the roads but should have. So bad I passed lots of trucks and trailers turned over on their sides.

Last winter while I worked at May I was stuck in Cheyenne for 2 days due to I-80 being closed. It opened and I still felt unsafe driving, however, logistics at May was putting the squeeze on us to "get moving." Like an idiot I did what they said. By the time I got past Laramie, safety was sending out "GET OFF THE ROAD!" messages. This was after I passed at least 10 tractor trailers turned over. There was nowhere to pull off into a "safe" spot. I kept going and made it alright. However, my student trainee had to change his depends diaper a couple of times along the way :)
