If the trailers you're pulling have the Betts pump for opening the valve find out what fluid is in it. Lots of places use oil, but when I was running tanker we used antifreeze to make it easier to operate in subzero temps. It can be a mess if you put the wrong stuff in it.
Another thing to do is get a spare plug for the emergency shutoff. Google "Betts frangible plug" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Most tankers will have one on the left front fender. Over time they can fail and then it will be impossible to open the fire valve without a new one, or at the very least carry a 1/8" pipe plug.BACON XXL Thanks this. -

WD-40 on the threads of the swing bolts on your dome lid will keep them from freezing in the winter. But you have to put it on before it gets wet and frozen.
A couple small pieces of steel banding or other thin metal can help with loose fitting camlock ears. Just cut the banding to about 3 or 4 inches long and slip it in under the cam ear before closing to make a tighter seal.BACON XXL Thanks this. -

And don't forget to carry spare cam gaskets and cam ears.
