If the trailers you're pulling have the Betts pump for opening the valve find out what fluid is in it. Lots of places use oil, but when I was running tanker we used antifreeze to make it easier to operate in subzero temps. It can be a mess if you put the wrong stuff in it.

Another thing to do is get a spare plug for the emergency shutoff. Google "Betts frangible plug" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Most tankers will have one on the left front fender. Over time they can fail and then it will be impossible to open the fire valve without a new one, or at the very least carry a 1/8" pipe plug.

I had plans to carry a plug or maybe even a ball valve so I could still have a safety release if need be. Thoughts?

A 1/8" pipe plug will get you by, but offers no way to close the fire valve from the driver's side in an emergency.

WD-40 on the threads of the swing bolts on your dome lid will keep them from freezing in the winter. But you have to put it on before it gets wet and frozen.

A couple small pieces of steel banding or other thin metal can help with loose fitting camlock ears. Just cut the banding to about 3 or 4 inches long and slip it in under the cam ear before closing to make a tighter seal.

Ok, Thanks for the tips. I've used the "cam lock shim" idea for a while now pulling fuel cans, only I save used load seals and use them.

And don't forget to carry spare cam gaskets and cam ears.
