Hello. I am new to the Truckers Forum. I am a new driver who just finished up at a 3rd party CDL school and is trying to get on board with my first CDL job. I have been a small truck Route Sales Driver for about 12 years, most recently with Hostess Brands, before their liquidation in November 2012. I now have my CDL Class A with HAZMAT and Tanker endorsements. I never really thought about getting my CDL until I found myself without a job and realized the demand in driving jobs was with those with a CDL. I am hoping to learn more about the trucking industry through the insights shared in this forum. I believe in starting at the bottom and working your way up, however, I am hoping to avoid starting with one of those companies that is dishonest with its drivers and unsafe with its equipment. I am from just outside of Pittsburgh, PA and have a family. My goals are to be home most weekends and to earn in the range of at least $45K in my first year. I am a sure thing to pass a drug/alcohol test 365 days a year. My short list of prospective employers is Schneider's (tanker) and TMC (flatbed). I hope to add to that list by getting helpful information in this forum. Thanks.

So far you have two good choices, especially tanker. Tanker experience can lead to those home every night jobs making around $60K per year.
McElroy and Maverick have weekend home programs.
Prime has a tanker division, but don't know if any accounts in your area. It's food grade, not hazmat.Number5 Thanks this. -
i was in a similar job for Peterbilt as a route parts driver, which lead me to school as well. I have heard good things about Tmc, tough work mostly flatbeds from what i take it, but good company. I am like you in wanting home time- with my wife being disabled, but as a new driver i expect to get the runs that newbies get and cpm to match, maybe you might luck out and land a gig paying that 45k a year or more, but im at or around .30cpm. if you run less than 3k miles a week your pay is going to be mediocre, and from what i have seen and heard you cant garuntee that kind of mileage. Go with a compnay if they offer a percentage if you can.

Thanks BigRigJoe. That was one of the things that I liked about the TMC presentation I heard, that they do give you a choice between cpm and percentage of the shipment. You have the option, apparently, to change your payment preference every 6 months. It looks like the only hurdle I have yet to overcome with TMC is where I can park my truck on weekends home, without getting ticketed, or getting my fuel syphoned, or having my unit/shipment messed with, since I don't have a place on my small piece of property to park it.

let me know how that works out, i didnt think about that, vandalism/boosting etc. I just assumed you were able to park in a parking spot but my wife and i have an apartment, shes going to hold down the fort while im away until she can ride along and then we will give up the lease and save all our checks. but thats 6 months with JBS.
thats really good you can choose percentage, wish i had that at JBS, well got to start off somewhere i suppose and get my experience in...then 2 years from now i can get on with my buddy he owns his own company mainly haulin grain seed etc...but insurance needs 2 years experience before i can get on...
