Hello,
I come from the great flat state of Kansas. I have been interested in big mechanical machines for as long as I can remember. Did my first OTR trucking when I was about 8-10 years old. Went out with my sister's husband at the time and we went al throughout the east and southern states. It was a neat experience and since I have worked in construction and millwork industries. I am interested in what this industry could offer me. I love to drive and have no issue driving for 10-12 hours at a time to visit my daughter. I would like to put the work in to making that maybe a paid trip every few months and with my current situation with my soon to be ex wife, I don't think I will be having much of a life in the state I am at and will be following her and my daughter where they decide to go. This has made trucking seem like a better avenue and maybe I can get on with someone after getting my license. A local college does the course and it is somewhat affordable. They start in Aug. Thanks and hope to learn alot from the forum!
New to this all!

Doubt you'll find a company that will let you work one trip every few months.
Get a local job where you're home every day.born&raisedintheusa and austinmike Thank this. -
Encourage them to move to a state with no state income taxes. This will really be a benefit to you so you can keep more of your paycheck.

Chinatown (above) is right.
Especially in the current CDL job market -- carriers are not looking for/interested in an "occasional" driver....

Hi Bob, and welcome. I don't mean to be insensitive with the "popcorn", it's just we hear this quite often and plays out like a movie sometimes. Short answer, only in rare situations does a trucking job revolve around you. Unless a dedicated account, meaning, you do the same thing everyday, trucking is basically an "on call" job, you don't make money visiting relatives in a certain area. Many times folks confuse trucking with driving the minivan to grannies on Sunday. It's not a "paid vacation", as some wish, and I'd look elsewhere if you want that kind of relationship with the kid.

How do 9 states get by with no income tax? A tax expert explains the trade-offs they choose
Numb Thanks this. -
I'm now in Nevada. No state income tax and no tax on food at the grocery stores. Property taxes are low. There is an entertainment tax which brings in lots of money. Nevada, especially Las Vegas, is a vacation destination for people from all over the world, so that entertainment tax rakes the money in.born&raisedintheusa, The_vett, Flat Earth Trucker and 3 others Thank this. -
Same way with New Hampshire, they have so much tourism that’s where a lot of the money comes from. At times in town there’s far more Massachusetts tags than New Hampshire tags on the cars.
