    If I recall, NC is also 6 months, but you can renew it once for 6 more.
    The school I went to required you to have the permit before the 1st day of school.

    No need for a permit until there is a truck in which to train immediately or in the very near future.

    All these comments are good. You'll have time to take the written and get your permit once you make a deal with a school. Of course, if you get the permit first, and for any reason it does expire, you can always go get another one. I think. GAnthony is right, ask the DMV for information before making any choices. Best.

    You'll probably be eating better in your truck than the rest of us.
