To begin with my name is Nick and I would like to thank you experienced guys for taking your time to read this.
Background:
I’m finishing my last weeks of CDL school. I was able to get a Military Exemption but I knew nothing about the business and honestly had no idea how to drive a 10 Speed so I used some GI Bill on a school. Over the last 5 years in the Army I got some experience driving trucks but most would be considered Class B trucks. So as for my background it’s safe to say I’m a very cheery driver. But as I am getting out of the Army it’s very important to me to be home for a change. So I started looking at local gigs.
I’m getting Medically retired and will be out of the Army in about a month headed back to the Norther Indianapolis Indiana area.
The Problem:
I currently have two job offers and I am struggling to decide between the two.
Waste Management Rolloff Driver on a dedicated construction route. (Pays about 19.50 an hour with mandatory overtime and weekend work during peak season)
The other is with Monarch Beverage a local beer distributor. The pay is much higher at $22 an hour but it’s much less hours and physically exhausting work.
My family owns roll offs (Class C though) and to be honest it’s a semi relaxed gig once you get into the swing of things (and if you have an auto tarp) but I hear so much negative about working for Waste Management. I know the business but I hear that Waste Management is a horrific company?
The beer delivery job sounds good but I have back issues and I have a feeling that it can’t be a forever position. But it will get me CDL A time while WM I would assume is mostly Class B vehicles.
My goal is to eventually do what my neighbor did and get hired by Big Brown and work as a feeder driver with UPS. So I feel that working at WM would be good to get in with the Union but bad because it’s class B work.
If you where me what would you do and why? It’s really hard finding local work as a new driver. So I am still looking but these so far are the ones I have for sure.

Beverage work will destroy your back, even if you're in perfect physical condition.
Sodrel Transportation may have something local such as drop & hook US Mail.dennisroc and NickAtNight Thank this. -

Forget WM. They have bad rules. Like... If your truck is involved and gets hit three times. You're fired. Doesn't matter if the truck is parked. Still counts.
JB Hunt, and another big one both have banners on the overpass Oasis' in Chicago for new drivers.
Might check into FedEx contractors? Get a dedicated run. Home everyday.dennisroc and NickAtNight Thank this. -
Include concrete companies , dump truck driving, and local Propane companies to your search. Some of the places have Class A tractors and may put you one one. Never stop tryin, when I got out no one wanted to except military experience. But I kept applying and got my start
And I wish you well on the beloved feeder driver gig!!!dennisroc and NickAtNight Thank this. -
WM would be mainly a gig until I could get myself a job with Big Brown (hopefully I can maybe land a seasonal gig?).
I hope that Teamster Time would be beneficial? But again I’m kinda a microscopic fish inside a massive sea. New Driver wanting local work with basically 0 experience.
I have a feeling I might end up going WM. I just really need to build that experience.
But idk if driving toll offs is “good” experience to have if Big Brown is the dream job. -
I was Infantry so basically no one will accept my vehicles as experience.(Waste Management did).
I will have to call more of these local dump and TriAxel companies but I have a feeling that WM pays the best for a fresh driver.
But again I am reluctant working class B work because idk if Big Brown will even consider that experience?
The Monarch Beverage place offered me a no touch freight option at .40CPM and 2100-2500 miles a week. Not much money and it’s night time only. Might take it just to get my feet wet though? -
Big Brown is a good goal. Those guys, after a few years, really make the money.
The other one is.... YRC?(hope I got that right) ... It's the new Yellow Freight Lines... both the banners talk about training new drivers. Am sure they can work something to north Indianapolis.NickAtNight Thanks this. -
