    Twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B killed six.

    Among the victims were Karenna Groff, a former MIT soccer player named the 2022 NCAA woman of the year; her father, a neuroscientist, Dr. Michael Groff; her mother, Dr. Joy Saini, a urogynecologist; her brother, Jared Groff, a 2022 graduate of Swarthmore College who worked as a paralegal; Alexia Couyutas Duarte, Jared Groff’s partner who also graduated Swarthmore and planned to attend Harvard Law School this fall; and Karenna Groff’s boyfriend, James Santoro, another recent MIT graduate, according to a family statement Sunday.

    The MU-2 turboprop is a high performance aircraft that has a reputation of being a “widow maker”.
    Majority of the accidents involving the aircraft are attributed to pilot error. However MU-2 drivers have to undergo ANNUAL proficiency checks (FAA mandated for that particular aircraft type). The airplane is unique in that it doesn’t have ailerons- it uses spoilers for roll control and it also has full span flaps. Mitsubishi warns pilots that the plane has to be flown like a jet aircraft,particularly if it experiences an engine failure on takeoff!
