Not as odd as you might think, my husbands orientation for the company he works for now was 2 days, drug test day 1, waste time day 2 for drug test to come back. . . Aka 5 min of paper work, 5 hrs "learning" how to do e-logs ( everyone their had already run e-logs) 1 hr safety lecture. . . Oh look your drug tests are back, heres the keys to your truck, paperwork, sign please. . .first load is on the qual com, do your pre trip and take off.

Small companies, run on a smaller margine, the truck isn't moveing they are looseing money.

My concern is strapping chaining and tarping procedures for the different loads. I thought the company would at least give me some input but I guess not. I couldn't ask for a better equipped truck though every option possible is thrown in for the driver right down to the microwave, and fridge but that doesn't help me with securing loads. Do I go to the nearest scales after I load the truck to make sure I am ok. And if I am overweight on an axle can i take the truck back to be reloaded to be legal?

Most places will re-adjust the load if you are heavy on one axel, if you are over gross, get something removed. We never ran into a company that wouldn't, i'd guess their are some out their.

I don't think we ever went to a place we were the only truck getting loaded, most skateboarders are more than happy to give advice or a hand if you need it.

Their has been more than one newbie get on the forum and ask "how to" cause they aren't sure. See if your company has a mentoring program, never hurts to ask. Maybe just get the number to a more experienced driver who won't mind answering questions.

Just remember to take pics of the load and put them on the thread also, that helps a great deal.

Thanks for the answer and no there is no one to mentor they have 12 trucks and 2 are sitting in the yard. They just want me to pack my bags and show up on wednesday to find out where I am headed.

Oh, small company. Well like I said, we never hit a shipper that didn't have other ppl loading. Watch how others are doing it. Really the regulations plus common sense will get you a long way.

    Ask here.

Its great to get a truck with all the toys but I would be more concerned about the OWNER not doing a bit of training as your inexperienced with flatbedding regardless of what you did in the past.

All the best and if not sure ASK someone.

I hear you brother that is what I am concerned about, I haven't even met the owner just emails and dropped off paperwork to the secretary. Years ago I hauled a tanker on a flatbed which was full of css-1 tack. The trailer got squirly on me at 50 so I drove about forty miles an hour to get to the destination. I have been watching videos on proper techniques on youtube and reading up on the regs. I am comfortable hauling construction equipment but that is it and there is a lot more to flatbedding than I originally thought. My total orientation has been a pee test, signed paperwork, looked at the truck, and turned in voided check for direct deposit. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Most shippers will help you out if you are considerate and honest.

When I first started out I just told them i'm new and have never hauled a load like this can you give me some pointers. It has happened where they have'nt been helpful but its extremely rare.

Edit: I shouldn't have said when I first started out because I haven't been around all that long and I still tell them that same thing.
