Who in hades was talking to YOU? I don't recall ripping anyone for spelling, or for 1.2 years of driving, or for knowing nothing.
Go fill out a job application with spelling errors, punctuation problems, poor grammar, and see how many job offers you get. Let me know how that works out for you.......

Advice still stands. Why not ask these questions BEFORE you drop a wad of cash? Maybe because it's common sense, something many people lack these days?

The work history is a problem, I think because the companies realize it is a hard road to take, and they don't want to invest in people who quit for little reasons. It takes some work to just get used to it.

The other advice here is sound, you really will have to work at getting a chance to prove yourself and then prove yourself. Some people like Swift, I'd say it is one of the places to try and get a start.

First, you can overcome all of this. You will have to try harder, want it more and work harder. Whether we acccept it or not, we are always in a competition for jobs. They will always pick the one they think has the most potential. Face to face interviews will be the most productive. You have to sell yourself. There will be a lot of no by phone and Internet. That doesn't mean they won't work. I prefer a face to face.

IMHO, the work history will be the worst. Isn't that mandated in the regulations? Ten years of driving history or three years if entering driving. Not filing taxes will raise some eyebrows too. Not accusing you, but many will think there is more to this than meets the eye. Many will think it means prison or no motivation. I'm just letting you know what you are up against.

Figure out a way to document the handyman work. Maybe letters from people you did work for. Get reference letters from creditors, supply houses or trade associations. Figure out a way to put a positive spin on this and sell yourself.

I've done some stupid things and found myself in some tough situations. I promise you if you sell yourself well enough they will buy.

For the work history, I would attach a statement with an explanation of what you did, with some names of customers you worked for and maybe some dates you started the jobs. Even use some of them for references if they agree to it.

And yes, a face to face meeting goes a long way to getting you a job. I worked for 3 different companies in my 9 years of trucking and all 3 came from walking in the door and talking to the hiring person.
