if you go to independent driving school you may be able to get grant money.if you are unemployed your county welfare office has federal money paying for education including driving school.you will stay have to go on as a student driver but you will not be owned to that company for a year

Welcome Rookie, We need all the help we can get!

From what I see most of the negative that I see here are disgruntled drivers that just want to slam the company. Sure there will be problems with most every company but be constructive with the criticism instead of just slamming them.
I know that this wont solve ALL of the problems, but keep the dispatcher happy! Dont complain all of the time. Personally, I think this is alot of the problems that the guys are having that are complaining about different companies.
Anyway, I have done industrial/production maintenance for over 20 years and am currently driving a wrecker. It's time to make a change so I am starting school with Stevens May 2. -
It's human nature to post the negative. Remember there's always 2-sides to every story. What's the solution? Research and more research. Make the most educated decision for yourself based upon what company fits your style the best. There's no company that I'm aware of that will meet everyone's goals, but categorize and do your best. Once you make a decision, stick with it, make the most of it and go from there.

never thought of going that route with grant money to go back to school. had thought about checking into the v.a. for retraining. but until i have a decent amount in savings to support my family for 8 months or so until i can "get in the groove" i will continue to watch and listen to the forums. and try to keep my mouth shut at work. and since i am still employed the "welfare" part just isnt an option for me and frankly i wouldnt want to go that route anyways. for me, using welfare, well nvm i wont go there. just say it isnt an option for me.

our welfare office is more then food stamps and medical cards. Its is a job center which has a seperate office for people looking for employment.I did have guys in my class who did get funding thru VA.you really dont want to owe a company for tuition

I am headed to TDDS May 9th. TDDS Technical Institute in Lake Milton located near Youngstown, Ohio. Very excited 10 week program, 270 hours. With a 6 week extership as well. At TDDS they offer Title IV funding (which most trucking schools don't) FAFSA may include grants, government student/parent loans or alternative educational financial aid programs.
What are some good companies for a newbie like me? -

well it came a lot sooner than expected. due to lack of business, was let go from last job, and instead of trying to find another job as a mechanic, made that leap. i start with roadmaster on 5/23/11. 3 week course. seems kinda short but, am hoping for the best. nope i dont expect all peaches and cream. just going to cross fingers and see if this pans out. so will now be keeping a closer eye on the posts around here.
drive safe everyone. another new driver to hit the roads soon.
