If your age is listed correctly you won't be able to drive interstate . You have to be 21 . Most companies require drivers to be 23 .Baack Thanks this.

Welcome to the forum Doglover44 (Jake)! I'm sure there have been many, many folks in your shoes. I'll be going to driving school myself in a few months but I won't be going as a 20 year old. I'm 56 and back when I learned to drive you either had to learn to shift a manual transmission or learn to love walking. That's just the way it was. Auto trannys were around then but most cars were manual. I learned how to use a clutch, shift, down shift, etc. All my buds had to learn to do the same thing. We all succeeded. You will to! That wasn't advice, that was encouragement!
My advice is......put the "shiftin' shakes" on the back burner for now. Instead, get a good text on driving big rigs. Get one that has a lot of information about regulations, inspections, safety, etc. Read until your sick of reading.....then read some more. Stay in touch with the good folks on this forum, too. Ask questions....learn!Baack Thanks this. -

Just try to relax, and it will be okay.Your instructors will help you learn how to shift, and it will soon become second nature.
Once I learned how to drive a five speed when I was 23, I've never wanted to drive an automatic again! Although there are more gears on a big truck than a personal vehicle, once you learn, it will get easier.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard the forums Jake!
The only thing to remember about standard shifting is to pay attention to what your doing. Listen to the engine and watch the RPM gauge as your taught in school. It won't be long till it is second nature and you try to shift your automatic trans in your car when your driving home from the terminal

Hi Jake, Welcome to the forum. Check out the Questions from new Drivers Page. I am sure you will find a lot of help there as well. But don't worry, they will teach you how to shift. It won't take you to long to learn either I am sure. But you will learn at your own pace, and remember, every trucks tach is different, so even if you hop out of one truck into another (same make and model and all) it will shift different. But won't take you long to figure her out, once you get rollin with her a bit.
Good Luck with driving school and your new career!
