I don't see the mention of DEF mentioned anywhere in this thread. When the temperatures really plummet, some places, especially along I-70 and south, the DEF will not be be working at the pumps (it freezes easily), and the store will sell out of jugs of DEF.

So, top off your DEF when it's available and working, and you know you're headed into a real cold weather pattern.

And again, keep a trusted form of anti-gel in your tanks when headed to 15 degree F and lower weather for a prolonged period of time. If your truck begins to show signs of loss of power, re-add treatment and top off fuel ASAP. The "warm" fuel out of the ground, along with the addition of more treatment, will de-gel the filter(s) in about 15 minutes of operation.

But so much of this discussion is variable and all depends on the origin of your present fuel, along with the amount of fuel added, and how the new fuel is "treated". But fuel bought in Houston is not going to like the 0 degrees in Wisconsin, and the fuel added in Missouri or Iowa may or may not be good in long-term 0 degree weather, and may or may not be enough to overcome the shortcomings of the Houston fuel still remaining.

Don't assume all truck stops in iffy regions will pre-treat their fuel, every load.

Also, an APU might help to keep the engine block warm and the main engine to start when very cold, but it does little to keep the fuel "warm" and flowing.
