lupe, I have no connections with UPS, but have many friends for well over 30 years working for them. For you to qualify, Im just giving examples of what I think, but some one else can add if the want. You need to have probably 3 plus years drivng, NO ACCIDENTS, Be able to hook-up to Doubles, Triples, and have that endorcement, Be on call, possibly, Work on the dock for starters as a package handler (Loading Trucks), You WILL start on the bottom. If you get hired, There rules are tough, but you have to want to do this. I also know a couple of other great companies I like, UPS Frieght, Conway, ABF, R&L, FED/EX, and All tanker companies. Tankers Are a Superior job, Pays Great, but you will learn a lot of what it takes to be a Tanker Driver. Lupe, good paying jobs are out there, Time, makes Experience, its earned, not given. Good Luck
the other side to this, because apparently Wargames has some hard-on for UPS, Wal-Mart private fleet drivers can pull 100K as well. 3 yrs/350K exp. required, no accidents or tickets for 3 yrs, in some area they want mtn. exp. as well, typically starting is $50K to $60K, I've talked to several drivers with 8 yrs on payroll pulling $85K to 90K and a couple of 10yr drivers doing $100K. Non-union, excellent benefits and retirment, there is a reason they are picky when hiring.
I own my own truck, I do about $75,000 a year after expenses but before taxes. I run my business my way, I answer to myself, Not some small minded supervisor, I drive the type of truck I want to, I run when and how I want to and have for many years. UPS, Frito Lay and a lot of those types of jobs are nice...For those that want that type of job! For someone like me a job like that would be a miserable, painful, slow death! The nice thing about America has always been that you could choose how and where you wanted to make a living and we ought not forget that as long as you are happy with your job and life....Good for you!
striker, I did post here, that other drivers can add great paying companies. Sounds like you have a hard-on for Walmart, but, do you work for them? Probably not. But they are also a great company to drive for. I knew a few Walmart drivers many years ago, BEFORE you considered driving. Walmart kept the qualified drivers that caused the company no problems, thats why, keeping a great driving record and ontime deliveries, gets them the top wages with Walmart. I have a theory in trucking, you need 20 plus years driving a truck, to be considered an experienced driver. Anything under that, your still learning.
Pay attention to your post compared to mine. All you've done is talk up UPS, UPS has been beaten to death on here. Someone else brought up Frito Lay, I mentioned Wal-Mart, let's put out options and not strictly talk up one company on this. Hell, if we're going to go this route, one of the local furniture companies starts OTR drivers at $58K, the three top guys are making $90K with bonuses doing over $100K, so what, I have no desire to work that hard, I also have no desire to pay some Union rep $100 a month so he can dust off his CTS-V with it and not represent me. I agree with an earlier comment, I make about $51K where I'm at, I'm happy with my job, sure I'd love to drive for Wal-Mart making $80 or $90K, it's not happening, but it's options, and it's not about talking up only one company.
I used UPS for a FINE example. Read what I posted earlier, IF SOMEONE WANTS TO ADD go ahead. Im done talking with you on this subject, you obviously have anger toward UNIONS. Were done.
I don't have any use for unions either even though I have an "in good standing" Teamster card in my wallet (long story)....It doesn't nullify my ability to converse on the subject any more than your obvious pro union leanings make your opinions null and or void. Just thought it was worth mentioning at this point.
I still learn things here and there also. Sometimes forgot all about things. But you have been there done that. Seen the old times and now the new. You were involved in a major part of this industry. I have many friends with the same years you and I have in this industry, now are all retiring. We have many stories from the old days of trucking. And from what I read all the time, Newbies, wannabees, gonnabies, have no respect for us. But Im retiring soon, so What ever these new drivers create, and allow companies to do (Low Wages), They will have to deal with. Just hope they can live on a minimum wage income, driving a truck.
I'm not retiring until they drag me kickin' and screamin' out of my truck...I still love this #### and probably always will! It's just different now but not too bad for those of us that set out in the beginning with some goals.
