A BOL constitutes legal custody of the freight. If a LEO finds freight on the truck with no coresponding BOL for it, his next question may very well be "where did you steal that from".

No BOL, no pickup. Bottom line.

And yet, that was never our experience with dozens of inspections at that company, with plenty of freight on the truck that wasn't showing on any manifest.

    No, I'm saying I wouldn't do it.

I cringe when I get a pickup at a non-regular shipper, because I know I'll get the thousand yard stare when I ask for a BOL.

People need to learn to have their crap together.

For my own experience, 19 years, always working for a private carrier delivering our product to our customers, two different companies. Multiple inspections, only once was I asked for a manifest or shipping documents. Handed him the actual manifest of stops and a stack of invoices. Handed them back and said have a good day.

We don't need no stinking BOL...just an envelope full of cash and directions to the delivery point. Two simple rules...don't ask questions and never insult the man by counting the cash in front of him.
