Look for scales on the way out of a shipper before you even get there to load. If there do not seem to be any before the state scales ask here if anyone has local information.

The only two times I have ever been called in the scale house for being over weight, the scale master gave me a little piece of paper with my weights on it & told me he would give me one chance to get it right. If it wasn't right when I pulled back on the scale, he would issue a ticket. Otherwise, if the weight was good when I come back on the scale, I was good to go.
I understand this is not always the case & I don't know how common it is but that is my two experiences. Both times were in Louisiana. Sorry I couldn't provide any additional info for the OPs question. Good luck. -
I read a lot of good tips here. The landfills, household movers, some ready mix/aggregate companies etc. And if the shipper loads heavy, they will have been asked the same question you have a lot of times, so they should be able to tell you. Also check the yellow pages under "public scales", especially in urban areas.
