Court appearance for company owner whose truck involved in Broncos bus crash

CALGARY — The owner of a trucking company involved in the fatal Humboldt Broncos bus crash appeared without a lawyer at his first court appearance Friday.

Sukhmander Singh of Adesh Deol Trucking was represented by duty counsel, who asked the matter be set over to Nov. 30.

Singh faces eight charges relating to non-compliance with federal and provincial safety regulations.

There are seven charges under the federal Motor Vehicle Transport Act: two counts of failing to maintain logs for drivers hours of service, three counts of failing to monitor the compliance of a driver under safety regulations, and two counts of having more than one daily log for any day.

The eighth charge under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act alleges failure to have or follow a written safety program.

Court documents allege the offences occurred between Jan. 1 and March 31 — prior to the fatal accident on April 6.

The maximum penalty for a federal hours of service failing is $5,000 per offence. The provincial charge carries a $310 penalty. A court can, however, use discretion to impose a penalty up to $2,000.

Alberta Transportation said Adesh Deol Trucking remains suspended.

On Tuesday in Melfort provincial court, Judge Inez Cardinal granted more time for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 29, to select his mode of trial. Sidhu’s lawyer, Satnam Aujla, appeared via conference call for Tuesday’s hearing, which lasted only a few minutes.

Citing the complexities of the case and the amount of time required to move forward, Cardinal adjourned proceedings for another three weeks. Defence election, in which the accused chooses to have the case heard at either the provincial court level or the Queen’s Bench level, was adjourned until Dec. 18.

    Fixed your link:

The good news is that it appears the Horsemen and the Crown did their jobs and by not rushing, but doing a thorough investigation (as opposed to what was suggested in Post #1), the driver was left with no viable option other than pleading guilty.

I'm shocked there was no plea deal. will be interesting to see the crash investigation details. I'll bet a dollar to a donut he blew that stop sign at highway speed.

I’m surprised he didn’t try to use aspects of that study as a partial defence .. least he did the right thing and plead guilty I’m sure Millons have been spent on this accident already on stuff other than the victims ... They really should include this accident in driver testing to show the possible result of being careless or in a rush
