And if you are using the Red ELC coolant, a filter is not needed. Since the primary reason for using a filter is for adding SCA to coolant, and ELC does not use SCA. You add SCA to the red coolant and you are cutting the life out of the coolant. And some of the OEM's go a step farther and require using nitrite free ELC coolant. Detroit and Volvo primarily. Detroit even on the Series 60 engines, not just the new DD engines.

The red ELC is far superior to the traditional coolant we used in the past. It controls cavitation on cylinder liners much better. That was the purpose of adding SCA's to previous coolants.... to control cylinder liner cavitation. That was because the coolant by itself did not prevent the cavitation. Since ELC is a whole different product with different chemical makeup, no SCA is needed. The coolant lasts longer, baseline for most of them for changing it out is 600,000 miles, some more. Only need to add an extender at 300,000 miles. No need to check for SCA's as it doesn't use the stuff. Only need to check for freeze point as you would with any coolant.

So many shops and mechanics are woefully uninformed about coolants, just like they are about oils. The Technology and Maintenance Council, the defacto standards groups for trucking, is completely on board with using ELC coolant exclusively. They have a recommended procedure out about coolants. Get a copy and read it.

3406C - no coolant filter, red ELC. Always looks like cherry Koolaid when I drain it. When it's old there might be a little gray sludge in the bottom of the drain tub.

The filter is on there to get the sand from casting out of the system, to keep the system clean of all particulate mater. They sell a "0" filter no additives, It is more applicable to a Cat, Cummins has them as standard equipment, Detroit coates the inside of the block and they still advise there use.
If you do not have one on a Cat and change the water pump you will notice the impeller, has a fluff like coating, that is the coating on the impeller worn, look at the new one then decide if a filter is needed or not.

How do I go about deleting the coolant filter from my 02 c15 6nz.. I am replacing the old green coolant with red 50/50 shell rotella ELC NF. The truck has 2 shutoff valves for the coolant filter. Should I just close them or should I also remove the inlet/outlet line to the filter and the filter itself while doing the swap and keep the shutoff valves closed.?
