Granny gear is used for loaded on a hill. So you don't destroy the clutch.

Basically you want to start off in 2 or 3 gear but dont try and be a speed racer. .
Take your time you will find what works for you.
But, if these drivers are telling you to "flip the witch" then you will be good to go. Just take your time.

18 speed is nothing to learn. Best transmission built IMO as it is extremely versatile.

Seriously you can drive it however you want. Split gears, don't split gears, split some gears. It doesn't care.

If you don't know how to split shift, bobtail is the best time to learn, rather than when you're loaded.

I would smack someone in the knee cap with a hammer if they ever tried taking off In a high gear loaded or empty, I’ve got beer to drink on the weekends, not clutch adjustments/replacements.

the low inertia boxes are every easy to shift, I usually shift a gear and a half, low, 1over, 3 direct, 4 over etc then pending weight full gear 6-7 then split 8th

Love seeing guys try and take off in 4th loaded. Engine rev'd up, cab shaking, driveline and frame all torqued up. All because they don't want to move a gearshift 2 or 3 more times.

what they are saying is you can flip the overdrive on and leave it . don’t confuse overdrive with high range.
Even bobtail you will need to start off in low range , Probabaly in second or third gear to get rolling .

the manual transmission has a high and low range just like the transfer case on every 4 wheel drive pickup.

An 18 speed is just a 9 speed with an overdrive that can be used in every gear

same as a 13 speed except in a 13 you can only use overdrive in high range .

the math doesn’t add up because with a 9 speed you have a granny gear available in low range and you don’t use it in high range.

so you have a five speed in low range ,
Then flip it to high range and you have four more gears, if you have a 13 speed you can use the overdrive in all four high range gears .

with an 18 you can use the overdrive in all 9 gears.

and as they said , now is the perfect time to practice your shifting .
Floating the gears without using the clutch ,
And using the overdrive to split every gear so you can get a feel of how it works.

No. You have to hit every gear, every time. Start in low range 1 and work your way up, 1 at a time. It's the law.
