I have seen two of these.
Both happened on locations that did not suggest driver error. Basically flat lands. The loads were heavy and the trailer undamaged except for the split. -
Pre trip, pre trip, pre trip. Might and i stress might have been pevented if the crossmembers were thouroughly checked before taking off. Ive come across several trailers in the past that I didnt take because several of the crossmembers were broken from the welds or just sagging.

Wow, Seeing that picture got me wondering about what the mega carriers would have classified this as> Preventable or Unpreventable Accident ? That truck looked like a O/O but you know if it was a company truck. They would have dinged his DAC/USIS.
-
Ok, I can say that the picture isn't fake. Never seen anything like that.
-
What kind of load did he have on it?
-
Wow very interesting never seen that before. Imagine passing a truck and all of a sudden the trailer starts falling apart like that.
-
Yes i would say it had cracked and or broken cross memebrs that should of been found during a pre trip. In my book, totaly preventable.
Had the driver done the pre trip, reported the problem to his supervisor, the trailer should of been put out of service till fixed. Had the boss told the driver to take and load it, the driver should of refused, based upon the broken cross memebers. Yes i know many are to scared to refuse things, but in this case , i would think the DOT Regs. would of backed the driver. -
I have seen this happen at a company I worked at before. What happened in our case was someone had backed down the side of our trailer sheering off the rivets at the base of the trailer, thereby weaking the support of the floor. Driver went to load paper rolls. Made it out of the dock and the floor split. It was preventable. If you see rivets that are sheered of during your pretrip you need to get that fixed.

I saw 2 trailers like that on I-78 in New Jersey about 3 weeks apart. That was back in 2007
