CDL 14 years. Drove for 5 years in the 80's and the only times I observed flashing was when visibility was bad. Flash your brights at me and I won't acknowledge. Tired of being blinded. If the visibility is good, I don't need confirmation. I know where the back of my trailer is, but I still flash anyway. I figure better to make a driver feel acknowledged than upset. Don't need upset drivers in an 80,000 pound projectile.

I never knew this............my trainer taught me to flash my brights to let a driver know its clear, never thought it would blind anybody if you only flash for a mili-second!

interrupt is all i use, i never flash brights but i look at it as keeping that rookie in a big company truck thats on his first day out from tearing the big ol hood off my pretty little truck. I flash everyone though, its courteous. Ive also told guys to bring er on over, but i try to do that just to spark conversations because im a bs'er and like to talk to people, so im always trying to spark up some kind of conversation on the radio.

Yes. It always seems, because I've been driving for a while, that I just know when I'm past the front of the other truck, and as soon as I look over, I get the brights. It's like someone taking your picture with a flash. How long had your trainer been driving? I have actually had drivers turn on their brights and leave them on until I move over or acknowledge them. Use common sense drivers.

I must add that it's not so bad in the day time. I was referring mainly to flashing brights at night.

I only flash when there is traffic behind the truck passing me. I know he wants to get over as soon as possible. If there is no traffic behind him, I don't flash. The reason is if you don't flash, drivers tend to give you a little more room when they pass. There is no sense in almost clipping bumpers if it is not necessary. Plus, I am tired of debris being thrown up, into my truck and windshield.

I do flash my brights at any four-wheeler that cuts to close in front of me, actually, I just leave my brights on for awhile. You know the ones that don't even give you a car length and usually, don't use their turn signals either. Maybe a short blast on the air horn as well.

haven't read this whole thread yet but...

cdl schools teach not to direct traffic, which is what flashing entails.

I still flash.. seems harmless enough, if I think its safe for you to pull in front of, me, why not? ...

when in front, I think sometimes I miss others flashing me, cuz.. I donno, I'm a newb, and I'm staring at the curving road, making sure I'm not going over any lines.. instead of checking my mirror for blinking lights.. and then I wait a long time before turning back in into your lane.. and I don't say thanks, cuz I never saw your effort, sorry.

I think sometimes ppl just need to relax a bit... just cuz someone doesn't blink back doesn't mean they are dissing you. :)

heck once, I had a blond moment and couldn't remember how to flash back. I think I squirted windshield wiper fluid instead. did you see that???

I don't flash unless it's poor visibility or the driver needs to get over because there's traffic waiting to get by him/her. I'm neither ignorant or a newbie. There was a day when flashing wasn't used every time, but you wouldn't remember that......newbie. Been driving 14 years solid. Actually started in 1984 before cdl's. Got out of it for a good part of the 90's. There were way fewer trucks on the road. Drivers would wave at each other. Some old timers still do. Those that don't wave must be ignorant or newbies.....ok....not really...that was sarcasm.
