Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
No openings until January

as desperate as you are for work, and your gonna ask 'em to put you off a month if they call? i can see why you're not working...take what you can get!
-
Yeah, well, I know it sounds retarded, but it's what I gotta do right now. I have some personal things going on that I need to get done before I get back on the road and won't have the chance. I don't know if it happens, but so far I've never had a trucking company actually call me back, even when they said they would. If I didn't call them, I heard nothing. From what I've read about Swift, getting a spot at orientation is seriously luck (
) of the draw and even if you have a start date you can still get bumped. At least with them I have an approval, but I'm not putting all my hope in them. A couple other companies I talked with early December said they aren't doing anything until January 2010 and I should call back then, so that is what I'm going to do.
I know things were looking pretty dismal a month ago, but I feel I've turned a corner and things, I feel anyway, are starting to look up. I got some good news today, and it's helping with a positive attitude. Afterall, from were I'm at right now, things can only get better. -
Hang in there, man, things will turn around. If they are saying that they aren't hiring until January, then I have to believe that things will turn around in just a couple days. It makes since really for them to do this. With everyone wanting to get home for the holidays, why would they want to hire a bunch of students that need to be trained with all their trainers going home.
So with January here, and a new year and fresh attitudes, companies should start hiring again, for better or worse. Do what I did, look at all the companies that get posted about on here, especially the better ones, but don't discount the ones not so well liked either. Start a folder with the names of these companies with their websites. Check them out, make notes in your folder. If you decide this company is not for you, make a note of it and why so that in a week when you come across this same company again, you'll know why you passed on it. If the company interests you, fill out their application and make a note in your folder of the date you applied. Then in a day or two, give that company a call and see what they say. Just don't get too discouraged if a lot of them still say no. Remember there is still alot of competition out there for that same position.
Good luck! -
Good Luck Dodge! Congrats on getting a temp gig, anything to keep the wolves from the door! I'm in that mode myself. I have been fortunate to sell off some unneeded stuff on CL to keep a few $ coming in. Also, because of the holidays, I really wasn't expecting much in the way of a response til the first of the year.

It just keeps getting better! Got a call from the school I attended with word of a local job offer. So I called the company and have an interview in the morning. I know I said I wanted to wait a month to take care of some personal business, but with this being a local job and they say home most weekends, I may be able to work something to get my personal stuff taken care of when I can. It's not a real big thing that must be done right now. If I absolutely have to it can wait. So cross your fingers! I'll let you all know what happens!
jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
Why did you not do research before enrolling in a school?
That is something I really don't understand, so I am not being a smart arse... I am truely curious as to why you didn't.
Anyway, Dodgerman good luck, hope it goes well...
Companies do call back and bombard you with mail. I am still getting calls from recruiters and when I get home there is always recruiting stuff from Werner, CRST. Swift... you name it... Oh well, makes for good kindling...LOL -
When I graduated last year, Steven's Transport sent me an email, 2 phone calls and 3 post cards. The bad part was they were only hiring at .26 cents.

Well, had my interview this morning. I think it went fairly well, although I'm technically not working for them just yet. He said there aren't any trucks available right now (Then why did the school say you were looking for drivers? That's my question.), but he said there should not be a problem getting me in a truck by the end of January. He's very happy about my two weeks orientation with TMC as he feels they have the best training program around, and my two weeks on the trainers truck actually gives me a leg up over other students. As he puts it, I'm in a unique position: I'm not a fully experienced driver, yet I'm not a completely inexperienced student either.
So now I just need to call them once or twice a week and keep in touch, and hopefully I will be back out on the road soon! -
Sounds like he may have drivers moving to a better company that isn't hiring until the end of January .
