There are a newer series of thermistors. These are basically temperature sensors in the a/c lines so the body controller knows how the system is working. There are two of them. When the system is cold enough, around 26 degrees F the a/c will not come on. If the thermistor has failed, or the wiring is bad and circuit is open the actual reading the body controller sees is actually zero degrees. Since zero is colder than 26 the body controller thinks the a/c is cold enough and won't allow the compressor to come on. The connectors at the thermistors are really tiny and really easy to corrode or break so that may be part of the problem too. The thermistors require the a/c system to be sucked down to replace.
