Spacecoast, your welcome. I live in the same area and my photos from my album are taken from the Walmart rest stop. I was in the same boat but now am concentrating on college. Good luck and let me know how everything goes.

I am trying to get Brevard Job Link to pay for it.
I will keep you posted if I get in, what the program is like and so on.

I haven't started at Truck Driver Institute of Florida in Sanford yet, because the Brevard Job Link said "I was ineligible because I haven't been out of work for nine weeks". I guess you have to be out that long before you are considered as "poor" enough to receive help. They don't seem to care that your UC doesn't cover your day to day expenses, much less your mortgage, etc., but thats another story.
I did find out that the tuition is $5995 for a three week course. Financial aid is available, but may only cover half of the tuition. You will need a background check, $50.00, and an enrollment fee, $100.00 out of pocket.
Hope this helps!

Spacecoast,
I would be very scared to pay a large amount of tuition to anyone in the current economy! My last 3 paychecks netted me, $211, $662 and yesterday $150!! Freight is very slow right now, some companies are laying off drivers, others, like the small company I work for, just let us sit at home 4 or 5 days then call us with loads with low pay. One of our drivers just went out yesterday, she had been sitting at home since Nov 25th. She doesn't know how she's going to pay her rent, I'm in the same boat. I wrote the rent check today knowing I have no money left in the account until next Friday once it clears. (I'm hoping for slow processing) And I haven't been able to make my car payment making sure I could pay rent. I may very well lose my car...
I doubt many companies are training drivers but that's where I would start, if you find one ask how much freight they're hauling or if once trained you will sit at home. If you need the work that badly you may have to forgo the reputation of the company to get started and get on the road. If you're driving you are building OTR time and can look for a better gig when (and if) this economy improves... just my thoughts, good luck

I think you're correct about waiting for the 1st of the year, everyone's waiting to see if the economy turns around. Right now it's a brokers market hauling freight, my dispatcher told me yesterday that one broker wanted us to haul a load for .88 cents a mile!!!My company was getting $1.36 a couple of months ago, while there are those who may be losing loads because of the cheap freight rates, there are drivers out there who will haul cheaply just to move.
I've applied at two small companies locally and they tell me the same thing about not having a truck to put me in. Even pissed off drivers aren't quitting in this economy. As far as "hearing about JB Hunt, Covenant & Schneider", you be the judge, do your own homework. Truck drivers all have opinions and for every one who disses a company you'll find one who likes it. The bottom line is; if you're sitting in a JB Hunt rig, going down the highway, getting paid for the miles, you're making money!!, better than not being able to pay your bills.

Thanks Roy, that was also a concern of mine, that I get the right course and training that has some merit and someone will recognize as legitamate. That was an excellent point. I am going to try some small companies. It would be better than spending time beating my head against the wall with a big outfit. Well at least I kept my cdl current. Yeah, I am sure things have changed alot since the old days, Qual-com and such. Hell the only thing I drove was a nine speed and sometimes a 5 speed. Now some have auto-shift? What's up with that?
Wow not money there, maybe I'll just stay on unemploymenet. {LOL} Lucky for me I got time to do research and ask questions about everything.
It is funny, some guys seem to be getting miles and other guys can't steal a load.
Hope it picks up for ya Roy!Last edited: Dec 12, 2008
