The best thing to do is cut it up in pieces. Then haul it to a scrap yard. Use the money to buy a newer pos with a title.

Drag it to the scrap yard cuz that's all you have now. Use this as a lesson learned and move on.

On a side note, that trailer has sat so long that EVERYTHING will need to be replaced. But you might be able to find a farmer that would buy it just for planting season to move stuff around the fields.

OP said he bought the trailer in 2007, so presumably has been using it since then. Don't know about NC, but this might give you some ideas.

You can go to any police dept with the VIN and get them to run it in the system to see what comes up for ownership. Fairly common here in GA where a title is not required on older vehicles. Nice to know what you're buying isn't stolen before you hand over money. Some PD's charge a small admin fee to do it. Either way, you'll find out who the state thinks the owner is.

Re: the time it takes to get duplicate titles. In GA the main DOR office near the capitol that handles IRP registration is also the same office that actually prints the titles. With your paperwork in order and a $10 "expedite" fee, they will hand you the title over the counter as fast as it prints out. Might take a day of driving and paperwork jockeying, but that might be an option versus weeks of mailing stuff.

Last resort is what windsmith suggests, a title bond. The signed, notarized paper you have might be enough to get the bonding company to do it. My heartburn with that is that it still leaves documented ownership up in the air.

Whether you scrap it or do something else, protect yourself from the hungry and greedy relatives of the dearly departed former owner. Now that you've already contacted them, they know there might be some found money with you.

You can give these guys a call. I've used them a few times for a few cars I've bought with only a bill of sale and a couple motorcycles. No idea if they can help but it's worth a call.

Unless you have MEGA $ invested in it , think about it. Is it worth additional time , $ , effort for a 28 year old trailer thats worth next to nothing.

I would just leave it where it is.

he says he bought it from the lienholder, so the lienholder must have repo'ed form the titled owner.

a little legwork should get it straightened out.

in ga you can register a ""homemade"" trailer, get a serial number and all

Regiuster it in ME. On a trailer that old all you need is a bill of sale.

Kind of hard to cut up a trailer you do not have actual title of ownership on, better to just leave it there and let the deceased lien holders relatives have it.

That's why you cut it up in pieces. I know they won't take the whole trailer in one piece in Indiana with out a title, same with cars. But in pieces it just a heap of scrap. That's how its done in Indiana.
