Use a truck GPS to route and follow during your trip, but also use a satellite to view of a non-truck GPS for planning and to make sure that you are comfortable with the truck GPS routing. Once in a while truck GPS's will come up with less that good options and a bit of route tweaking can be helpful.

I don't trust the gps completely , jerk out the trusty atlas to verify the route, and I google map satellite ( fine tuning route on the I-pad) and I most always get contact #'s for pick up and delivery, they'll help me get in the best way for the truck.

They are paper so they are updated every year. Don't underestimate the usefulness of them though. They have tables with restricted routes for each state, not local jurisdictions but highways. Also low bridge locations, weight limits, etc. When you are going into areas you are not familiar with the book is invaluable. In my experience, especially on the eastern half of the country.

It is much more than a map. You may want to check out the first 50 pages. Also, you would be surprised at the number of people that have never used a map in their life.

You can get one at Amazon, iowa80.com, ebay. Just google Rand Mcnally Motor Carriers Atlas

I’ll admit it- I’ve never used a map in my life. I know how to use them, just never have. When I said I might want someone to show me how to use it, it’s because I’m not sure what a truck map consists of. I’m sure I’ll figure it out but I’ve never seen one before, only car maps so I don’t know how they differ.

I'm aware. I own one, and use it almost daily. And even if someone has never even seen a map in their life, that shouldn't stop them from being able to figure out "how to use it" in about two seconds.

I figured he was kidding when he told you to get someone to show you how to use it. I mean....it's not exactly rocket science. Fire up Google Maps. Pinch the screen so it zooms out. Bam! You got a map. Same thing, but not on a phone. Now you know.

As far as the first fifty pages before the maps start are concerned, just read them. You don't need a teacher for that. Each page is labelled as to what it's for. And most of the time, you'll be looking for specific states anyway. Go to a truckstop and thumb through one, and you'll see what I mean. Then, buy it on Amazon for about half the price.

A map is a map, my friend. The RM atlas just has details that help you as a trucker. Toll roads, restricted roads, scale houses, stuff like that. It's all color coded, and very easy to figure out.
