I think that is more than an average sized false-hood.

Any hijacking, mugging, robbery, that is reported, is a matter of public record.

muggings aren't as common as they once were but may be making a come back shortly because of the state of the economy. They were always covered in the papers just not on the front page because the commonality of them left them almost un-news-worthy. This only until there were a rash of them and then the groups of muggings was front page news with the mayor explaining what they were doing to correct the problem.

If someone was killed in the process then that made it a murder and it was still front page news or atleast front page metro section.

    robberies are also covered...

hijackings as far as I know are still and always have been sensational crimes and all are covered...

most truck loads disappearing are either driver involved or else a trailer is hooked to and pulled away. As in stolen, not hijacked.

my definition of close quarters in trucking is you trying to break into my truck... in this instance I'll still take my thermos over you trying to swing your kubotan in the cab of my truck. You'd probably draw a reasonable amount of attention walking thru the lot with it also...

We the drivers are on defense. The big bad wolf is on offense. He gets to choose when and where to get you when your guard is lowest.

In your locked truck, in a well lit truck stop, full of other trucks, while you are in the bunk sleeping is probably not his best choice.

Maybe some half ###### druggy wanting to steal the radio and thinking the truck is empty.

I'll take my air-horn and thermos.

walking between the truck lot and the truck stop?

My thermos... lol if the guy has a gun, he has it pointed and I'm not digging my gun out or swinging my thermos... here's my wallet, you win.

in the crapper, pants around my legs or in the shower, no clothes at all...?

    you pretty much win...

As a mental exercise, follow along here...

I am the wolf... and you are the victim...

I really really really don't like witnesses and this is to your advantage...

pretty much in all other scenario's it will come down to if I am willing to kill you to win.

If i am willling to kill you, you lose (period) (every time).

If I am not willing to kill you, maybe I win, maybe you refuse to cooperate and I either get ticked and kill you, you make a move and I, though the agressor, actually kill you in a defensive stance because you are fighting and winning, or you end the robbery by giving me what I want or else by simply refusing to give me what I want.

instead of thinking what you would do if somebody tries to rob you...

think of how you would rob somebody else.

when you do this, you will find, the guy you are going to rob, can't win.

    except...

you aren't planning to rob one particular individual... you are planning to rob the easiest person of oppportunity from the herd of idiots and this is the guy you will rob.

    bad guy picks the rob-ie...

the robbie... me... only has to be less attractive a target to avoid the entire situation...

this leaves the wolf... going after the dumbest of the herd... and the few morons that will walk thru the dark because they are packing and have a false sense of security.

as robber... you don't know who is packing... so you may get the odd ball going for a gun... an obvious cost of doing business.

does any of this make sense?

Yes, you make sense, for certain situations, but don't cover them all. None of us do.
And you misunderstand me or I misrepresented on those two counts:
We don't sit and read the papers in every town about every robbery or whatnot: we'd be amazed at how much goes on. Just looking at our quiet little local berg and the NEW developments in Yuppieville, I can't believe how much crime there is. And we're on the far outskirts of Atlanta up by the lakes. I threw highjacking in there without knowing how much of that happens, I admit.
By "close quarters", I was talking about hand to hand, or in the cab. And the point is that you pretty much have to get a swing with a thermos; a kubotan you do not, and the pressure point of contact is much smaller, therefore magnified.
But I STILL don't want to get hit with a thermos. And about carrying ANY weapon, be it a hairbrush, sharp toothbrush, thermos or whatever, you have the right and the need to decide wether or not to use it. For me, one on one, no guns, I'll fight to keep what I worked for. But I'm fairly fit and rather on the strong side, so I generally have an advantage of sorts. I just don't have the attitude some of these guys have, and I know that a small guy can be like a badger in a fight.
Witnesses. You gotta be kidding. I've worked a lot of apartment burnouts around the Atl, and I gotta tell ya, they DO NOT CARE!!! I've seen people run over, shot, and gangbeat in broad daylight in front of a whole neighborhood. Those guys also come over to the good neighborhoods, and they don't change their thinking when they do. There is a new type of desparado borne of peer thinking that includes no conscience whatsoever.
So if you carry only ONE THING with you, let it be ATTENTION. Your best weapon, I'm sure you'll agree.
BTW: if you find yourself in the 'hoods, guess who your WORST danger is? It ain't the thugs on the corner. It's the 15 yr. old with something to prove to his peeps.

I have a 6 cell maglite, a 3 cell maglite, a 5 pound ball-pein hammer, and a length of chain in my cab. Never been questioned on any of it when crossing the border.

I dare someone to break in. LOL. I will immobilize the crook and strap him to my flatbed, then take him through the blue beacon truck wash....then turn him into the authorities while he cries for momma.

....Maybe pay a lot lizzard to have her way on him so he catches AIDS too.

During the week I look thuggish. I clean up for pickups/deliveries but in between that I don't look approachable at all. When doing my vehicle walkarounds I always have my 6 cell maglite in hand. Doors locked at all times. When walking accross the parking lots at night I stay in the most open spaces.

You whack somebody in the head with a hammer, some scumbag attorney will go after you for assault with a deadly weapon, even if he started it.

Never use a striking tool to defend yourself. Mag-lite is your best choice (6 cell preferably):biggrin_255:

I, like many others here, come from many generations of family that have ALWAYS had weapons for various reasons- crime is not one of them.
Instead of trying to convince us, that we are wrong, even though we have committed no crime, why don't you take your Thermos, and go into one of the crack houses that have been established in a once nice neighborhood, and tell those guys how wrong they are.
To be on the safe side, don't forget to show them your Thermos!

for guns to be a true deterant everybody has to have one so that perpetrators are less likely to commit a crime.
If 50% of the people are carrying, how does a criminal know who would be safe for him to rob?

how does a criminal know now? they don't, they play the percentages.

I don't trust most to carry a gun and act rationally.
I do NOT trust criminals who carry guns to act rationally, statistically they just want your wallet, not your life.

There is a better chance of armed citizens who simply want to protect themselves to act in a rational manner.statistically no... armed rational citizens tend to get drunk and ticked off and shoot people, thereby, becomging criminals themselves.

It seems to me that you do not have much confidence in an honest citizen to use good judgment, too many drunk hillbillies for my taste. however you also seem to think that the armed criminal will "do the right thing", I find that interesting, and troubling.
statistically, they want your wallet, and if you kkep your cool and give it to them respectfully and beat feet, you will live through the experience.

then there is the whole other side of the coin... assuming truckers got guns... so instead of being told to cough up your wallet, you are ambushed and shot dead, then the perp digs your wallet out of your bloody pants.
There is/was a big problem with that sort of crime in Jamaica, not because of armed tourists, but witness elimination. Illegal for the tourist to carry there, and the criminals don't like jail time, so....could this sort of thing happen to us? possibly, but it hasn't statistically been an issue yet.

btw I'm not anti-gun. I have a nice rifle, shotgun, and hand gun collection.
Apparently you believe that all firearms should be kept home and looked at; I have working firearms, that are designed for target shooting, hunting, home, AND "not at home" protection.
I believe whole heartedly in using them
    .
Myself also providing you submit to the rules involved, otherwise you are just another criminal, albeit one with good intentions.

I don't even have a problem with guys packing that have concealed carry permits and some real training.
I have never had a permit, nor "real training", I feel I am way better off than the majority of people go through the training, secure the permit, then put the firearm in the closet. I shoot, and shoot OFTEN, in addition to digesting a lot of info related to self defense. No, this does not make me an expert by any means, only better educated than the majority of people whom have already forgotten what they have learned.
    why no permit?

but if you want one because you'll feel safer... I think you are tiche bit paranoid.
And I think you are a misaligned liberal who thinks everyone should follow your opinion simply because it is JUST that, your opinion.
touche to an extent... actually I want you to follow the logic, make a rational decision, and then live your life as you see fit within the bounds of the law.

u can however get some training, get a permit, and pack away.
    Thanks for your permission.
    you are welcome, honest citizen:biggrin_25525:

you might have to also quite your job and start your own company and only drive in those states that will allow you to pack a gun.
    WHY?
you know, to avoid being a crimnial yourself by packing a gun illegally

me and my metal thermos are just fine in our sleeper... no permit needed.
I could see myself being carted away from a crime scene, on a stretcher, telling the medics trying to stop the blood flow from bullet wounds-"I didn't need a permit, I had my Thermos".

I don't see myself as being a victim at any crime scene. This is probably the main difference in our ideology...

By the way, since Thermos is a registered trademark name, I'm curious if
another brand of metal coffee bottle would be just as deadly in a shoot-out?
cute... but I've never been in a shoot-out, you probably never have been either... and most cops are still shot with their own gun...

I, like many others here, come from many generations of family that have ALWAYS had weapons for various reasons- crime is not one of them.
Instead of trying to convince us, that we are wrong, even though we have committed no crime, packing illegally is a crime...

why don't you take your Thermos, and go into one of the crack houses that have been established in a once nice neighborhood, and tell those guys how wrong they are. is this what you picture for yourself? walking in with your gun... ready to clean house? or do you avoid those areas so they aren't an issue?

To be on the safe side, don't forget to show them your Thermos!

I actually thought the thermos was a really good idea... I brought it to print when the pictures of sharpened key chain fobs were being posted...

personally I still think it is a good idea... trucker disables attacker with coffee filled thermos during failed mugging. no charges expected or pending says DA. "it was clearly a case of self defense."

you know the guy was within arms reach... not 4 or ten feet back out of my personal danger zone... and they won't be confiscating my mug for trial like they would with a sharpened key fob or brass knuckle book ends...

Well, unless you guys are planning on pistol-whipping an attacker, you're probably in the wrong thread, but I actually expected this one to turn into a ballistic/nonballistic argument. I'd like to pack, but dont want the worry or risk of my job, so I started this thread for alternatives.
And for the record, I'm debating with myself about grinding the point off of the Kubotan, even though they sell them with a blunted point. And they are legal to carry, if you'd read up on that; I'm just not sure about having a sharpened point. I saw where length becomes an issue for other fighting sticks and such, but for truckers, the ol' tire billy has been a standby for a long time.
I also thought about tempering the bolt: a punch can be a handy tool too. Might as well make it into something dual-purpose.

Not to badmouth your handiwork RedFox, but you would be surprised to see how weak your homemade kubo is compared to the real deal. Slam yours down on the pavement on its end and it very well may bend, if not crack. And if you are trying to knock a knife away you're almost guaranteed to have some sort of failure.

But hey, it looks cool and that can be half the battle sometimes.

Might I suggest that as a trucker, you do an eBay search for Kubotan Sharkie.

I'd seen the sharkie and thought "gee what a nice slippery little thing to try and point someone with"?
No, mine is a 3/8"x7" STOVE BOLT, with copper tubing and plumbing compressions pushed together with 3/8 nuts. If you can bend that, you're a much better man than I am. And the fittings are interspersed along the length for grip, not looks. No use having a tool that will slip out of your hands. It's a bit heavy, which I like, in case I just want to punch.
I think any kubotan falls short in the event of trying to slap a knife away: you go for disarming the arm, not the knife. And the old wrist bend is the proper way to disarm a knife anyway, so the kubotan isn't used for that. I got in trouble for carrying a knife some 40 yrs ago because I refused to carry a little penknife: but back then I also looked the part and that was probably the reason. I'm totally straight looking now.
Another trick I see for the kubotan is hitting the sensitive back of the hand when you're grabbed. I suppose that would do something for a knife hand too, but I need to think about that. General idea is to stay away from the guy's blade, right?
