Northwest Without jakes

Every time i have gone to look at a cabover project the cab jack has been dead and ive walked away. Are cab jacks unobtanium? Does any company make universal retrofit or aftermarket reproduction units?

 

They are really cool, until you drive one. My first experience driving a truck was in '77 in a '74 Ford Cabover.

Sitting on top of the steers is no fun at all on rough roads. It's downright painful. I hope OP at least has air ride. I didn't.

 

Next time I visit my folks I'll try and snag a picture of the water fill station at the bottom of the main bush road. I think its still there. Hasn't been in use for probably 35 years lol.

 

Usually on the old steel suspension trucks if you loaded properly to weight she rides fine. It's the cab chatter from a working engine or a 1930's era bad road. I remember a stretch near Gettysburg that was itself literally THE original 30 west and my rig was just too big for it. It's like trying to walk across a log.

Not to be confused with the newer 30 west.

 

avoid cabbage take 20 out of Ontario out to Burns.. otherwise be real careful make sure your gear it down real good as in the like third or fourth

 

Just go slow, steady easy pressure on the brakes and you won't have any problem. Wasn't that many years ago that hardly anyone had jakes.

 

That trick only works when the drums are new and perfectly round.

More pressure is required as the drums start warping.

Yes they do, but it is a common problem. I seem to think they go bad from setting, seems like if they are steadily in use they work, at least I never had one I was driving go bad.

 

Cabjacks?

God checked his Cabjacks first early on day one while it's pitch dark. You follow me? Those you do not ever neglect. Ive never seen them go bad, however there has been movie stunts when cabovers like a Suicide type is allowed to float on the front frame bolts a few feet above pavement at highway speed. But you have no shift control, that linkage goes away when you raise a cab.
