I had to update my antivirus. I got a special email and decided to use it.
It's half off (50%) on Norton Internet Security 2012. $35, you won't find a better deal for Norton.

I trashed the service they try to sell you.
I almost used Microsoft Security Essentials which is free.

I read a Microsoft article that said you have to be real careful what you pick. Many antivirus downloads themselves have malware and viruses in them.
I know I'll never use that Avasti. I bought an ebay laptop in the past with that and could not get all of it off the computer. My last laptop came with McAfee. I hated it also. I've always been pleased with Norton, so I'll stay with what I know works good.

Problem with Norton ( my opinion) is once it's in place you'll never be able to change to anything. Almost impossible to get rid of it. My Laptop came with it as a free trial, I never did activate it. I removed it and installed McAfee. I was still getting "reminders" from Norton to activate.
I re-did my laptop recently and bought a new copy of System Mechanic ( this time the Pro series and am using their anti-virus.
The System Mechanic is a very good set of tools to keep everything up and running right.
Zone Alarm ( the free version ) is a Great firewall too. ( something Norton won't be compatible with.)bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -
Zone Alarm runs for x days and then it wants you to buy now.
Norton takes a lot of memory.

I have 2 computers, the newest one had Norton pre-installed for free 60 days. Ended up paying when 60 days ended and has been flawless. (it's worth it to me). The original computer had McAfee and another then finally Microsoft security essentials, which is free, however let a virus get in, but calling Microsoft 800 number got it corrected, I was impressed that they spent an hour with me on the phone, even tho it was "Steve" from India ! Or was it "peggy" from Romania....Can't remember.
CondoCruiser and 25(2)+2 Thank this. -
Trend Micro FTW. Runs quietly in the background, doesn't have to tell you everything it's doing. Cheap and changes are easy.
-
We are satisfied with Kaspersky in the lap top, and AVG in the PC.
These things are trendy. One brand is top rated for a couple of years, and then another one is better. I quit McAfee and Norton years ago. -
I finally got fed up with Norton after many years of dealing with them.
It seems they like to constantly remind you of your expiration date and when it gets closer, and you are not even on the internet with the computer, it gets a virus.
Found the only way to get rid of the virus, was the removal of Norton.
Since they are gone off the computer, I no longer get viruses. -
I've never had an issue while running Norton, that being said I ran corporate for years. For those who do not like it, contact Norton prior to the removal of the programs as it does work alot like bloatware when removed incorrectly.
-
Alot of programs when you uninstall will leave residual files behind. I always do a search and manually remove the rest. Most are lingering in your program files.
I mentioned Avasti because those residual files refuse to let you remove them.
Norton has come a long way. They don't use much memory cc194217 as they overwrite alot of their updates. Maybe the old Norton, but not the new. Now they do little micro updates every 5-15 minutes so not to hog your resources. I downloaded this morning via satellite and it was about 120mb or so. My memory usage meter actually dropped from 24% to 17% after deleting the old antivirus and adding the new install.
The email reminders are because you are subscribed to their mailing list. When you initially register, the box is prechecked. You have to uncheck it. It's right above the box you check to agree to their terms. You can still opt out of the emails when you get one. Look at the bottom of the email and you'll see an unsubscribe option.
I've been using Norton since 2004 and never had a problem. They get better every year.
The main reason for the post was the special sale. I never seen it that cheap. It's like $60-$70 everywhere I seen.
Like heyns57 said, they are all trendy. There are many good ones out there and there are many bad ones out there. I would be leary of the free ones, because nothing is free. Those are the ones that you pick up malware and stuff. One needs to do their homework. -
What kind of legal action can someone take when discovering another person has sent you a virus. Is this legal in the first place? I try to keep off the spammy sites, but it just seems like every site has something wrong in it. I have a computer tech that handles all of my computer re-ups and he says he has a program on his hard drive that stores all of the senders of viruses and spyware adressess in case the FBI or somebody need it someday?
