Since it is the world wide web, it's hard to do anything to someone in another country. Then if in the US, you have to prove who done it. I've seen people hack websites and plant their bug. How do you prove that? Hacking is illegal, but they are hard to catch. A good hacker will bounce his IP all over.
The majority of cooties, they piggyback an email attachment or on a download file. That's how they get by your firewall. Then when you open it, it get's released onto your computer.
Besides having a good antivirus and spyware software, be real selective on what email you open. Email attachments are the most common way of transfer. Only open who you know or subscribed to. Never open any junk mail and if any junk is in your inbox, send it to your junkmail so it gets marked as such. Most emails use a paperclip icon beside the name to show an attachment. I'm sure others do, but I like hotmail because they will block the content of a suspiscious email that makes it past the junk filter.
Downloads are you next concern and you should be selective there also. A good antivirus will warn you of know viruses and malware. Of course, porn is about the most popular item on the internet and the bad people use that to their advantage to find a way to transmit their virus. So stay away from porn and video downloads.
One's I know of that many like is smiley.com and weatherbug.com. Those places will trash your computer. Be careful of screensaver sites too.

all the "charge money" anti virus are basically scare tactic CRAP.
MS Security Essentials works better than most any of them and it's FREE.
Then routinely run SuperAntiSpyWare and Malware Bytes Anti Malware and you'll be fine
Best of all....EVERYTHING I JUST MENTIONED IS FREE!!!
go to bleepingcomputer.com
nothing but tech geeks and programmers/developers...this is the set-up they suggestCondoCruiser Thanks this. -
AVG is free and works just as good as any of the paid ones.

Microsoft does have a reputation to uphold. Maybe I'll give them a try in the future.
But I would be leary of just picking any free antivirus blindly. Especially from Russia or Romania.
Most go with what they know. That's why mega money changes hands for Norton and McAfee to be preloaded on HP, Dell and other big name brands.
That's pretty much why I stayed with Norton. They never let me down. What's $40 a year on a $1000 investment? -
AVG was good...
Microsoft Security Essentials is the way to go, but you CANNOT have any other active antivirus installed if running MSE (Norton etc) -
Free & compatible with microsoft because it IS microsoft http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

Microsoft definitely has a "reputation to uphold" that's why they get more viruses than other OS such as Linux or Mac. Sorry I have been working at least part time as a computer tech since I was in highschool. This includes freelance, contract, and call center. If you're a basic user who doesn't do anything additional I still recommend at the very least using AVG. If you're counting on Microsoft to save your butt, well goodluck with that.

I used to use Norton before it was bought by Symantec, way back when an x386 box was the computer to have. My opinion is that Norton is way overpriced, anything beyond free is too much. It's too resource hungry, and like others have said, it's almost impossible to completely get rid of it.
I've also used McAfee, but got tired of all the false hits. It would hit on programs that I had installed, that I purchased from a retail store. Once I started using freebies, like AVG or AVAST, and seen that they're just as good if not better than most that you pay for. I will say that Kasperky does get some real good reviews from people that I trust, know, and are programmers.
The key to avoid viruses is follow the basic rules. Never open any email that you don't know the sender, especially if there are attachments. Only download software from reputable sites, like the manufacturer, or one of the big ones like Download.com. Stay away from the porn.
It used to be that about every week you would read through online publications, about a major virus that was discovered, and how half the PCs in the country had been infected. Not so much now. Most of the those sickos that write viruses are focusing on cyber-terrorism, hacking, and phishing.Roadmedic Thanks this. -
Try getting rid of that AVAST. That's the nightmare one I couldn't get off my old laptop. Many downloads leave files behind when you uninstall. I usually go in program files and manually delete them. Not AVAST, it'll deny you access. You have to request permission from the developer to get a special cleaning tool. It's just another step in hopes you keep them.
Nothings for free. These ain't angels saving the world. Their software serves a purpose just like many free things on the web. Whether it's gathering your surfing habits or personal info for pinpoint marketing, there is something there to benefit them.
Norton is not resource hungry either. I can remember a time that could be said, but what I have now. You don't even know it's there. They do alot of idle time scanning and updates are done in micro bursts every 5-15 minutes to avoid large downloads. That was one of my concerns, but I found with the updates, they overwrite the files instead of you collecting large masses. They even scan the web to attack stuff way before it even reaches your computer.
This is off the website.
It's #1 for a reason.
The whole purpose of the OP was the special sale. It's gone now. Not even the Black Friday price was that low. I wouldn't pay the $70 now. When it was $35 made me say yes.
I gave my sister a copy and I even have it on my phone now. That's the next line of attacks as most peoples phones are unsecure.
