Probably because in the others they get to stay in motels and not be restricted to the little area behind the drivers seat. They are also not treated as second class citizens by the business they deliver to or buy fuel or even the law enforcement officer in some states.

Heh - heck, Law Enforcement has no jurisdiction on the RR right of way anyway. It's why there are RR Police
Maybe I should re-think getting my Engineer's cert -
LURCH: It's called the FRA and they can walk on RR property any time they wish. RR Police are for theft while on RR property, getting hobo's off the property etc. The FRA is the railroad equivalent of the FMCSA. Remember; we're talking federal here, not state cops. But even in some states (OH with the PUCO and TX with the TX Railroad Commission predominantly) there are people employed by the state who enforce the rules within that state, as well as the feds.

psanderson - yup - my sister and her hubby used to work for NTSB, now work for FRA. NTSB can enter onto RR property any time they want to, also, in real terms.
The RR police are enforcement. Trespassers, rowdies on passenger trains, theft, as you pointed out.
I think we're on the same page.. in general, state and local police have no jurisdiction on RR property. Of course, the feds can do anything they darn well please. And they do it with alarming regularitypsanderson Thanks this. -
The rate is higher because we are an unskilled labor position as defined by the Dept. of Labor... I guess that is what you get from unskilled labor, higher drug use. So who should we be looking to to change (buzz word) this? Oh now Uncle Sam is going to step in and take charge of this??? Yippy How come this looks like a bigger mess, and cost more money to police now, after we get all the companies on board... Guess it will make the roads a bit safer, but what about the four wheelers? Hummm I'm from your government and I'm here to help you out... out of your cash and job so you can be forever dependent on us to support you and your lowlife habbits... Just a thought.. I can do without thier help!

PSAnderson, like I'm gonna tell you what the company and my friends names were. God knows you'd have your panties all in a bunch calling your local police dept about such horrible crimes that took place 10 years ago.

I'm not disputing this figure, because I do not have the facts at hand to do so. All I can say is it falls into the category of:
1) Lies
2) #### Lies
3) Statistics
I have personally witnessed how statistics can be skewed to force an outcome that is what the statisticians are trying to prove. I am all for traffic safety, two wheeler, four wheeler, eighteen wheeler or whatever. But I am also much against this working toward TOTAL POWER of the federal government.
Now I'm not one of those "black helicopter seeing" folks who think that the feds are out to get them. But I have worked extensively over twenty years in local law enforcement, with federal agencies. And quite frankly, it frightens me.
It frightens me because I have seen first hand the folks who are supposedly our "federal guardians" bend or just flatly ignore the rule of law. I've seen what happens when someone who is power hungry does not have much in the way of oversight.
I know there are hard working, dedicated federal law enforcement officers. And I certainly do not wish to give them a black eye. But I've seen how administrators love to "feather their own nest" in the quest of power, and career advancement.

Yup. In aviation, in shipping and (I am assuming) in the railroad, the Captain/Engineer is considered the ultimate authority in charge of the vessel. This only applies in trucking if something goes wrong.

Must vary by company. I never had a problem being the captain of my truck.

Neither have I. I was speaking in general terms of how the industry (and society as a whole) tends to view and treat drivers.
