Thurs: left for first stop in Pittsburgh. they gave me a bad address, ended up lost. made a couple phone calls and got the right address, which was a jobsite 20 miles away. this doesn't happen very often but when it does it's always a mess. usually only happens with LTL loads, sometimes we get some oddball deliveries here and there. got to second stop, which was 20 powered pallet jacks for a Crown dealer. we haul a lot of Crown lift trucks, they are secured with wood blocks and nails and I spent quite a while pulling all the blocks and sweeping up nails. anyone who has worked here for more than a month carries a big crowbar. part of the job, they pay me to do it, some guys hate it, I don't mind it. headed for 3rd stop, blew a trailer tire on the PA turnpike and wasted 2 hours getting it fixed. got to 3rd stop in central PA which was a 180lb pallet I dragged to the back of the trailer and the customer unloaded it with a skid steer. like I said, oddball deliveries sometimes. got to 4th stop and they were closed, I sent dispatch a message saying I'd unload in the morning, dropped my trailer at the customer and bobtailed to a Sheetz convenience store for some dinner. 302 miles today.

Fri: woke up to dispatch calling at 6am asking for help repowering a load. another driver ran out his 14 hour clock and could not deliver on time. I took my trailer down to MD, switched trailers, delivered his load, and they preplanned me on a load just across the PA border on 81 that loaded in the early afternoon. made it home by 6:30PM, off all weekend, I can leave out whenever Monday and drop my trailer in Lansing, MI and probably reload in Lima. 500 miles today.

they seem to have somewhat of a tolerance for people who screw up, but I've found that if I don't cause them these sorts of problems like being late, they take care of me. this week was a little bit of everything, some regular customers, some new customers. LTL loads can get crazy sometimes but there's enough drop and hook truckload in between. if I did LTL every day I'd probably lose my mind. made around $950 for all my trouble this week, slightly below average week at 2350 miles, but stop and hazmat pay made up for it.

Does Cheeseman use brokers in finding backhauls? What are the most popular lanes you run?

They very rarely use brokers, I think while I was there I pulled 1 broker load. As far as there high volume lanes I80 and I90 from Ohio to NY and NJ. I 65 and I 75 from As far North as Illinois to the Carolinas and Ga.. They have a pretty informative web site...check it out.

you mentioned the apprenticeship program. Do you know if they work with the VA so a driver can use his GI Bill while involved in the apprenticeship program?
