What company did you go with??

P.S. The point Im making the carrier will be calling this OO to verify dates of employment and such (like you said, required by law) but the next step is the sticky one, that carrier will send your information over to their insurance company (even if self insured, they have an indemnity insurance company backing them) and the first thing they will do is contact that owner operators insurance company to verifiy the date you were added to his policy and if there were any claims while you were driving, and unless you were added to his policy (at a huge expense if at all possible with out a refresher) they will say no this guy has never listed this man on his policy, everything stops there. The reason many of these companies want a refresher because the insurance company demands it.......not just of large companys, but owner operators as well, as you stated he is a companies as well.

I'm sorry, let me clarify. The owner op did inform his insurance that I would be driving with him. I'm not meaning to misinform, but I'm not the one who actually talked to his insurance co., so I'm not the one to ask about it. It may have been his general liability insurance that he listed me as an employee, as he also has a 1 million $ general liability policy. I've never owned or leased a truck, so I'm not sure what is involved on that end. Needless to say, everything worked out. Hope this helps.

That is the same situation that I am in kindof. I had been out of trucking since mid 80's but had 5+ years otr prior to hanging it up. Recently as I posted elsewhere I decided to come back (kids, wife, etc. all gone) I got tired of sitting in one place. The company that I work for among other interests "has trucks" but only run locally and not every day, "less than 100 air miles / always back to the terminal within a normal work day of 10 hours + or - so no logging required) So I asked the owner if he would mind if I used one of our rigs to retest and get my CDL back again, He said sure!

While this is a great way to knock the rust off, it does not really net me any recent verifiable otr exp. So while I CAN say that I worked for XYZ Trucking for ?? Years I'm thinking that does not mean squat in terms of getting hired by 123 Trucking and heading into the wild blue again.

What advice would those here give to someone in my situation. I'm 51 Years old, Squeaky clean driving record. Recent "within a year" ago aquired my CDL back again. Have over 5 years OTR exp. including snow / mountains etc. (pre. 1985). with none of it being verifiable other than individuals who knew me at the time.

While I feel I'd be a heck of a find for some outfits or OO's. What's the best way to connect the dots here? it's like the Chicken or the Egg question.

In 2000, I went to work for a O/O who was pulling for another company.
We also pulled broker loads under his authority.

I even worked and got paid under 1099 taxes.

All he had to do was put me on HIS insurance, and away I went.
But he did run with me for first 3 loads, he in his truck and me in "mine".

He had 4 trucks, and 3 drivers working for him.
    We were ALL "company drivers".

What is so hard to understand that an O/O is just as much a company as the "super carriers" with 5000 trucks ??

If your doubts had any merit, then an O/O would be screwed if he decided to sell and go with a company as a "company driver".

It would only be "his word" that he had ANY of the experience during the time he owned his own truck.

Trucking isn't like getting security clearance.
You list employers, and they call them or check your DAC.

    Geeze....

For him to team up with an O/O is not any stretch to believe.
It happens pretty often outside the overcontrolled world of "big trucking".

    Oh yeah, one more thing.....

Even if you pull a "stick wagon" hauling logs, or a chip wagon, and you work under HOS and run a log book, you are classified as OTR for experience purposes.

I believe SS had more of a relationship (friendly wise) with the O/O I don't believe he just bumped into him and all of a sudden he said hey I want you to meet my wife, kid's and my dog so we can all be a happy jolly family and I am going to convince this guy by letting me ride passenger and to let me drive his truck just because you gave him a meal and opened your door's to him a stranger?

To top it off he magically got you into his insurance with out you forking over any type of money?

This all happened in a matter of how long? How long did it take you to convince this O/O to let you drive his truck?

Did you pay for your abstract or did he pay for it? So he took time off his hand's and lose money to verify you was ok to drive with him?

Like i said one out of a million. It's a nice inspiration though.

Medicine man how long did it take you to find a gig like that might I ask?

Did you have a connection somewhere. Just because you did it doesn't mean everyone can. How about the drivers that have a bad dac report what would your advice be?

    Jonny1 Thanks this.
