Sorry to harsh your mellow, but you asked, I answered.
Perhaps you can come back in a month or two and prove me wrong.
    Good luck.

Don't most of them require me to have my CLP learner's permit before I apply? If so, I'd have to first go get the DOT physical, then go to my local DMV and get my CLP learner's permit before I start applying to companies with paid training. Is that how it goes?
I think I read that they only go back 5 years on driving and background checks. Is that right?
What are the best ones these days that give decent paid CDL training? I'm in south Georgia.

Assuming you acquire your CDL as described above (i.e., thru the "Hope Scholarship" pgm) -- I think probably your best option for starting out in the trucking world would very likely be with Wiley Sanders Truck Lines:

Truck Lines | Company Fleet | Shippers | On-Time Delivery | Wiley Sanders | Troy, Alabama

    &

Entry Level Drivers | Truck Driving School Graduate | Less Than 6 Months | CDL | Wiley Sanders | Troy, Alabama

Their terminal is on the north side of Troy, AL.

I have seen TV ads within the past few weeks, advertising for drivers.

Not sure if they are currently taking in new drivers...or not.

    Best to inquire within.

    A co-worker used to work/drive for them.

She had nothing negative to say about them.

They offer several different freight types.

You will later find that driving a big rig is VASTLY DIFFERENT....from all your previous road adventures.

It's definitely not for just anybody. o_O

Here's a current (as of the timing of this post) ad for new drivers, with May Trucking....their nearest terminal is further away...over in Pensacola, FL:

May Trucking -- hiring new CDL grads -- Eastern OTR

They have the nickname of "no-pay May"....so ask what kind of miles you'd be getting.

At 41¢ per mile -- you need A LOT of miles every week. o_O

How far are you from like a major city like Atlanta or something like that? Sign up for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash Instacart, all of them and sleep in your car between shifts if you have to. Go work around the clock for as long as you can somewhere like Atlanta you’ll earn $300 a day. Until you figure out your CDL situation. This will give you an instant income source. If you were gonna go, do OTR work, you were going to be away from home anyhow. Just a thought

My neighbor does DoorDash and Instacart both. Makes tons of money.
