To the OP. That's good to hear. We always hear from those struggling, and having a hard time backing in school. But seems we rarely hear any follow-up from them ... did they survive the class and get at least somewhat proficient? Did they quit?
For some, trucking and backing is "in their blood" and they pick it up pretty quick. For others, not so much. It's probably guys like you at your present phase of learning who could better help those in class struggling with this same maneuver.Strider Thanks this. -
Im no teacher and very new to the trade but would help anybody I can, if I can. If I saw you digging a ditch and I had time I pick up a shovel and give you a hand, but knowing my luck most likely you really digging a grave and not a ditch and I catch a charge. LOL sorry poor attempt at humor.

Congrats man, always fun when you do it the first time. I paralleled in like a pro my first time in school, 100% LUCK since I'd never done it before, but I still got to take trash all day because of it LOL! I miss school, I had a lot of fun.

thanks but I did not get it at first but when I did I got it right, when I realized you don't have to make big moves on wheel to get a large response from rear that really helped. I have a hard time getting use to how close I am with the back of the trailer while backing, like when you back up to a dock. I cant tell when im pushing the barrels, is there some trick or is it something that comes with time?

Way to go feels go when it happens don’t it!
When I was in school and the teacher saw I was getting board on forward & back they said go do ally dock. When came my turn I got it in first time and a lot better than others that had been doing it all day. When asked how many times I have done ally dock I said “counting this time…….this is my first”.
Same thing happened when I did parallel parking, got it in there first shot not pretty but was in. Shocked the teacher when I told him first time doing it. The next day another teacher walked me thru how to do it “by the (school) book” and it just fell into place. After a few times with feet on the floor and idling it in teacher broke school rules and said “now give it some gas”. Was not pretty the first few times but was able to do it with gas. State test was 1 shot no pull ups in the rain no less.
What I liked was after doing the parallel park you would pull thru the cones & flags to setup for ally dock but after the ally dock was to back it thru the cones & flags back in the parallel box with out hitting or running over the cones & flags.
Yes I did help others both ally dock & parallel park. One guy just could not get it, I wanted to tell him to find something else to do as driving a truck was not for him but it was not my place to say. Don’t know if he ever made it thru school?

Some tricks was to pick out something you could line up with. Say a crack in the ground and set the tires, trailer or tractor, on it same for mud flaps or landing gear. Also if I remember right when sitting in the seat you could take the trailer side mid light and line it up with the rear painted dock line and be with in the needed amount to pass.
Just don't let the inspector catch you but you are looking in the mirrors so it would be hard for him/her to catch.
