Craigslist is actually really good! Yes if you are the gullible type then you need to be extra careful. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to spot the real ads from the fake ones.
Genius tip #1 - Never send money or your personal information to an unknown website, link, email, fax, address, etc.... If it is a legitimate company they won't ask for this stuff up front. Most of the time you can get a phone number right away and physically talk to somebody. After gathering intelligence do a little research about the company, person etc... on the internet. Very easy to do if they are legit.
DirtyBob that was nice of your school to do that. They will usually only recommend a handful of mega-carriers that is paying them to do so!
I have seen some really good gigs posted on there! Especially a lot of unique ones. Ads for hauling yachts, expensive art, carnival drivers etc.... At the very least its a good place to get some good ideas as to what you may want to do.
gb2nyc, way to think outside the box man! You don't have to be a sheep and follow the rest of the herd! Take your time to do your research and make some phone calls and find yourself a good company from the get-go! Just because you are a newbie doesn't mean you have to sacrifice yourself to a mega-carrier. I think most individual just go with a mega-carrier because it is the path of least resistance. It really requires no effort, they do everything for you. Sorry don't mean to talk #####, but sometimes its fun! There's nothing evil about mega-carriers. Your chances of success are much greater though were you to go with a smaller company. Another big reason most newbies go with a mega is because their recruiter or someone at the school they are attending recommends them or tells them that these are the companies to choose from. The mega's pay the school and or recruiters to send them the fresh meat. During school a few mega recruiters will actually come and brainwash you during your class time! As newbies you don't know any better or what to look out for and they make everything sound really good! They also show you the posters of a brand new shiny, decked out, custom truck going around a mountain curve or driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, (also never any traffic). The caption usually reads something like "get paid to be a tourist (or see the country)". Anyway you get the point.
Props to you though for thinking outside the box!
Good luck to you and if you have any questions feel free to ask. There are lots of individuals on here with wealths of info!
Not sure if this exists.

Job boards like Monster or CareerBuilder are a good place to go. You'll get the bottom-feeders there, but you can find local companies too. You can post your resume if you want to let them search for you. You will get spam if you do that, though.
-
that's the 2 i was trying to think of.

Yeah, I use monster. While 95% will be experience required, you could get lucky.
gb2nyc Thanks this. -

The lifetime job placement thing is something they make sound sweet yet all there doing is sending your app to ppl. They will not guarantee you a job anywhere.
Craigslist..... Ehh....
I've see a few megas advertise . If they list a phone number, call it, see how they answer (get company name). Hang up, do some research then determine if want the spew. If they have thick accents... Don't even think about it.. -
