West TN Trucker, this is just a question I was thinking about. Are you driving trucks for the money only, or do you have other reasons?

Well it starts when I was 17 I was working for a large local tomato farmer here in my hometown small town called Ripley. The boss had a dedicated run where he went to Indiana and sold his tomatoes. Well my last day working there I just turned 18 and his driver was sick so well he asked me to help him make the trip. Keep in mind this farmer was like another father to me and he was out of options or maybe he trusted me idk. Worked for him since I was 12 every summer I got of school and sometimes he would even check some of us out of school to go help plant his tomatoes. Keep in mind this Indiana trip was 12 hrs one way from his house. He would drive there while I slept and the plan was for me to drive back as he slept. Well the trip when flawless and was a success. I wasn't hauling a 50 foot trailor r whatever but was biggest truck I ever drove before. I loved it and he paid me very well for that 1 trip. Also drove a few water tank trucks for a local cotton farmer growing up and loved it. After turning 18 I started working on the river and that takes a lot of traveling chasing them dredge boats. Have put prolly a million miles just chasing them drege boats on MS river even been to gulf of Mexico 50 times r so. What im trying to say is I enjoyed traveling was the highlight of my career. been pondering on this trucker thing since I was 18 r so but parents talked me out of it said its to easy to kill someone r myself driving a big truck. I consider myself a pretty good driver. Was driving on the interstates of Memphis Tn at age 18 chasing those riverboats. been to a lot of places and my favorite run was going to Freeport Tx. That was one of my favs cause it took me forever to get there from my home town lol. And as far as the money goes yes it makes life easier bringing in 4 digits week but I also have a passion for traveling and they say if you love doing what u doing for a living then you will never have to work again. So we shall see. And I know im not gonna be making 4 digits a week in my first year trucking but that's just a goal I want to set for myself.May even lease a truck after a while idk but for now I just want to survive my first year and not kill someone r myself and not wreck my truck.

West tenn .....you could save yourself a lot of money and headaches by looking into a company that has its own school and training..

Millis and roehl are probably the 2 best. They may not be exactly what you think you want right now but would be a great way to get some experience without having that massive debt hanging over your head.

After a year or so of experience you can then decide how you want to procede debt free and there will be far more choices at that time.

In your current situation my advice would be not to rush. Mistakes are made when we are rushed so take your time and consider all your options..

Yes that's 1 of my other options since I have 3 more weeks to play this out. Still gotta call the local school I have applied for in morning since so they wont think im skipping class r whatever. Also gotta call Schneider and tell them the change of plans. And hopefully they both understand my condition im in. if they don't then I will just start school as I have already promised cause I really don'see myself finishing my career in a factory after all.

This isn't always the case, it varies by state. Check with your state labor board to confirm your situation.

PS: my vote is to give notice unless the job is requiring you to do something illegal or unsafe.

Go with Schneider, and listen to Chinatown. Chinatown definitely knows the trade.

I suggest you get all of your ducks in a row, so to speak, get all of your documents in hand before you head off to school, one thing to consider is that while you are in school and then with a trainer, needing the time required to physically chase something down will be difficult to come by. Also, if you choose Schneider and they are giving a $2500 sign on "bonus", that effectively will be a 50% discount toward the $5000 school fee. Perhaps you can arrange for them to credit that toward the fee, so that when the "payback" plan kicks in you actually have half of the balance than what one would normally begin with?

Additionally, I think giving a 3 week notice, requesting vacation pay, and notifying them you will be taking vacation on the last week of the three week notice is the way to go. You get your vacation pay you give proper notice, you get a week to get your affairs in order before school.

Hope things go well for you, and that you keep us up to date!
