My personal favorite: you will be the one writing the check when you break it. That never gets old LOL. Got to buy a tire last night on the side of the road. Woohoo! Good times.
Not the right time?

When I make a decision its based on my personal situation as opposed to what the talking heads on TV tell me. I dont worry about THE economy, I worry about MY economy. I think a big part of success is in your mind, your mind thinks it and your body carries it out. There is alot to be said for the power of positive thought. Therfore I never let negative people decide what kind of day I'm gonna have or how successful I'm going to be at any given endeavor. "you are the CEO of your own destiny"

There's nothing wrong with the timing as long as you understand that being an independent trucker comes with a cost in terms of time and money that most people have no idea about until they get their own authority. You will be exposed directly to the regulatory structure, federal and state. All those jobs that trucking companies have people have hired to perform, will have to be done by you. You can hire some help fairly economically to help keep you straight, but, the facts are there are many weeks of additional work per year that you will have to do in addition to driving and maintaining your equipment. Being a first year MC means higher insurance rates, a guaranteed FMCSA inspection within the first 18 months after you get your DOT number, and the cost of licensing and permitting of your equipment. It's tough to keep up with it all but if you have a head for the business you can do just fine, but be forewarned, it takes a lot of time and money to make it all happen.

Oh, and about 30 seconds after you submit your application for you DOT number, you phone is going to start ringing from people who will try to sell you everything under the sun for your new business...ignore them, you can get everything you need for a lot less with just a little research.

Good to hear (or read) positive comments regarding a new O/O venture on the forum!
Driver, it ain't easy but it can be done. Do TONS of research. Even then, there can be some expensive lessons to learn. I'm going through one now, lol. I take it with a grain of salt and keep going.
Just make sure you are financially able to plow through expensive mistakes, repairs, etc.
Wishing you the best, driver.BulletProof Thanks this. -
I'm actually surprised at all of the positive comments and I would like to thank every single one of you. I am good with business and running one. I know book keeping and all of that. I will be hiring a CPA who is a friend of mine that has been around the trucking industry to get me started with all of the taxes. I guess I just started letting all of the negativity get to me and I started doubting myself. I love the company that I work for but there is no incentive to be better when I'm making the same pay as the new guy running the same loads as he is (no I don't work for a mega or a known company). I like to be able to put a lot of hard work into something and have something to show for it and build a reputation as a business owner. I don't want to put everything I have into driving for a company just to get paid and have the same reputation as the guy who just rolled out of bed and had a pulse so they put him in a truck. I know that it will be rough to begin with and I will have to stay on top of things.
The only thing I really and truly worry about is all of the regulations that are on the way. FMCSA just announced a plan to have E-logs in EVERY truck. I run paper logs and always have and it gives me an advantage. If I'm 15 minutes from where I'm going I can get there "legally". I wouldn't want to have to take a 10 hour break for a 15 minute drive or risk a violation. I just don't want to be regulated to the point where no one can make money unless they are teaming. However, if they regulate enough, prices will soar for goods in stores because trucking companies will have to charge more for the added time and eventually, someone will deregulate it some.
Again, thank you to everyone for giving positive advice. -
Go for it, My only advice is never lease to a carrier. Since 2009 I have leased to 3 different carriers and I'm tired of running hard for them while getting a check for pennies or nothing at all. As recent as today I have decided that enough is enough and next week I will activate My own authority buy purchasing the insurance/ plates and permits. Its just time to make that change. I see no future in hauling under someones else authority. Its just not profitable for me, I find myself doing more complaining than enjoying my drive. WITH that said Good LUCK.
It can be done. Ive watch family and friends make the jump and they couldn't be more happy..
