Dang! I could have rented a hotel room and stayed there the whole time with what I paid here for four weeks!
You got a great deal! I paid $4k for a four week course...

School I went to (FtScott CC) had a whole pile of Atlas to use. They said they go to local truck stop and get the outdated ones for a couple of bucks.

It's an awesome school, no matter what field of study you go into. Thier job placement rating is one of the highest.
-
You have to qualify that with "where" they are placing you. There are good driving jobs, great ones and those other ones...

I have some bad news, I finally got in touch with the case worker about my eligibility for the program. She wouldn't even tell me if I qualify or not because all the spots are full. She told me that it will be the end of April or May before any spots may open. I don't even know if I qualify for assistance so waiting until then may only be a waste of time. It seems as though everything is fighting against me but, I really want to drive a truck. The only other option is to go to a company sponsored school. I hear so many bad things about those that I am afraid to even give those a chance. So, once again, Now What?

Just wait her out and be first in line. Two months will fly by quick. Beside the weather will be alot nicer when you stand outside on the obstacle course for hours. The school sounds long but that means you'll get better thorough training.
Get on the schools website and look at the financial aid page. You'll see grants and scholarships that are available to you. Not sure about AR, but TN has a $2000 grant for truck drivers. Cuts your cost in half at least.
Do you have any friends that drive? Good time for a road trip and a little insight. -
Ok, after actually getting out there and looking for a job (non-trucking), I have decided that there are none. I have filled out several applications on-line and in person. I have not so much have even received a phone call from any of them. I am starting to get very discouraged at this point, so I have started to look at company sponsored training. The main one that I am looking at is Driver Solutions. The reason for this is that I am not sure, if I get accepted, how long it could take before I can actually start school. It has been almost 3 yrs. since I have had a descent job and I am ready to have another right now. So, what do y'all think about this decision? If I do decide to go with Driver Solutions I will only go if I am accepted by USA, I will not go with PAM whatsoever.

There's no difference whether you owe a bank money or a company for school. If you fail to pay you get a little bad credit ding. I personally wouldn't hesitate to do it. At least it puts you out there making money. If your making money then you don't have to worry about paying the loan back. You just have to have it set in your mind that you are going to follow through with it all and hang in there until your obligations are met. On the bright side you will have already been hired on and won't have to go through the job hunt bull$hit! Good luck to you, I think you will do just fine.
Rocknsand, rookie mistake using old atlas's! Especially if you are not already familiar with over the road driving. You should always have a current atlas and if you are using GPS it is also wise to keep it updated.
shriner75 Thanks this. -
The horror stories of trucking company training (that I have heard) are that:
you sign a contract to drive for them until they are paid back. which could be a long time.
Since you can not leave, they put you in the worst truck and the worst routes.
But I am hoping they are not all like that. If you have a clean driving record and a clean personal record and you are viable candidate for trucking (not having problems being away from home for such long periods) then have confidence that you are desired as a driver and something will work out for you.
Talk to other students at the classes, who got funding, and ask how they worked the system. I don't mean lying on forms or anything, but everyone needs help figuring which hoops to jump through at the right time.
After 30 years in my land surveying profession I had to get out due to the economy. OUr savings awas gone, our house is in foreclosure (we are trying to save it, but unemployment will not cover the payments, of course). My schooling was $4100. The school offered a payment program of $1200 down and $900 a month for the next three months. I will have graduated before my second $900 payment is due.
I had to sell family heirloom coins that I got from my grandfather's estate to cover the first two payments...
Keep looking for ideas and asking for help and one day we will meet at a TS!!!!

I will figure something out, I hope. I am really trying not lose all confidence. If I can't get into the local school I will choose to go with the driver solutions program. The main problem I see with the program is that I will have the company that I drive for chosen for me. Everything else about it appears good as long as you study before you get there, you take the written test on your second day.
