I don't care about home time. I just go visit family 1-2 times/year.

They get you home every weekend.... Dispatch on nights/weekends is barebones(1 person), and most of our customers are weekday 9-5 places, so we aren't really set up to keep dispatching over the weekend.

Along the lines of out of route miles, if you want to go to Walmart, or anywhere else for that matter you will need to hustle. I normally am shaving 5-30 miles off of most routes I'm given after running it through my atlas, google, and my garmin. There aren't that many people there doing this kind of work, but if you can save 10 miles and you go off route for 2 miles to go somewhere you'd like, it's still a reduction of miles at the end of the day. Remember, it's MILES, not TIME or STRESS. You really need to do the legwork of maping it on google through the use of VIAs to find out if your "shorter way" is ACTUALLY cutting miles, or it just feels faster. If the place you want to go is RIGHT off an exit though, it's no different than stopping at a truck stop. I don't see how ANY company would know or even care about where you stopped in that case.

I'll be starting with NB in a few weeks. I like to stay out around 4 weeks at a time and was told by recruiter that should be fine. I usually hit a WalMart once every 7-10 days for fresh stuff (salad, etc.). Do I understand right this should be no problem if it's right on the route? (Lots of times a WM lot will let you stay overnight; beats a lot of truck stops!) Also, I've been told a max of 1000W inverter ... is this set in stone? Or is there a chance the truck I get would already have one installed? This company sounds like a great opportunity; I'm really looking forward to it. Let me know if you could. THANKS

Oh, one last thing ... I was told I'd need my own GPS. Anybody have any suggestions good or bad?

I've used rand McNally gps since I started driving. I would get the newest one out and be sure to update every chance you get, at least once a month if you can. That coupled with google maps with satellite view is great.
Nussbaum is very strict on out of route miles. They are focused on fuel mileage numbers. If they would of let me take the truck home I would of drove for them.

I almost always look up my shippers and consignees using google maps with satellite view. That way when I get there the surroundings are not totally unfamiliar. Plus, of course, the truck atlas and calling ahead; usually the natives know how to get there. It's the stuff in between point a & point b where the gps is handy, especially close to the consignee. Although someone may give me a route, I still like to check it out on my own since the "sling" seems always only big enough for my ###, not the people who send me there ...

Also ... I'm less than 2 hours from where I can leave the truck; 4 hrs of commuting to work each month seems ok to me, especially for all NB has to offer. Thanks for the tips, mattbnr

Out of route is what they care about. I have NEVER had a complaint about where I parked, but if you're running out of the route to get somewhere, it's on your back and they probably will complain. I normally save 10-30 miles on most routes they give me, so I have a lot of wiggle room before I even get close to running out of route miles.

Inverter is not limited. Your truck will most likely not have one in it(you're one lucky duck if it does). They do not care the size, as long as it's wired appropriately for the wattage. I run a 2000W pure sine wave xantrex on 4/0AWG PURE COPPER wires with a 300 amp fuse. They charge you to install an inverter for you, which is what they prefer in most cases. I installed my own, but it's all based on whether they trust you(They checked over everything after mine was installed).

My garmin's crappy, but it works pretty reliably(it's from before the DEZL series, but it's still a truck version).
(I guess I misread, if the recruiter said 1000W maximum, I'd assume it to be so until you hear otherwise, but that is definitely a question for the shop since they are the ones doing installs and maintaining the trucks)

I saw an advertisement for these guys on Craigslist in the Seguin TX area. In the oilfields making decent payola, but also paying out the ### for housing. NOT that I am ready to jump out of the oilfields, but have been thinking about finding something where I can eliminate my current housing costs and maintain $1200+ per week in gross income. I would take a big paycut if I just banked on the $1000 gauarantee they are advertising, BUT would save $800-$900 a month in housing costs.

Read through this thread and saw that they have a limited hiring area. Seguin is here in South Texas, extremely far from the midwest as far as I'm concerned. Do they really run this far south? They aren't advertising a weekly home-time option in the ad, but rather monthly (which would be fine by me.)

I figure they must have an account down here or in the greater San Antonio area that would enable a driver to be home once a month.

We have a LOT of loads that run down from the midwest to anywhere along the Dallas to San Antonio corridor. I'm down there almost every week. Honestly, you'd probably be down in that area around every week or every other week, but they just can't promise an every weekend thing down there.
