Before I got a fuel card I used debit card and cash. Takes a lot more time...prepay..pump...paypay... but it was necessary in the beginning. Now I prepay online for fuel like another bank account and it is a draw down system. I never fall behind this way. Also makes fuel reporting much easier come ifta time.

Not 4%. If you're paying 4% for factoring you are paying too much.

I was under the impression that most of the bigger factors had very aggressive fuel discount programs. I could easily be wrong about this.
People don't use quickpay occasionally. You can find factoring for better rates than you can get from freight brokerages for quick pay. Also it's not a horrible thing to have someone making credit decision for you that first couple of years.

Every time your factoring company declines a brokerage you actively want to work with they are taking your ### out of an extremely risky situation where you had a good chance of not getting paid.

Everyone wants to run specific lanes and be home on a schedule. Unless you find a dedicated shipper it will be difficult to maintain specific regions back and forth. Especially if you start out using the loadboards and brokered loads like everyone else does.

You'll find in the beginning you will mainly follow the money. This will take you everywhere. There is no where I personally wont go for the right money. Then later you will learn where specific brokers you have good dealings with cover their lanes. Many of the better paying brokers have a specific shipper or similar shippers in an area they deal with. You find one like that who ships to areas where other similar brokers work out of and you will develop your "Lane or Lanes". This often changes and you will be constantly on the look out to make something else more profitable for you work out.

Believe me,.. I would love to run out and run back home on a steady basis. Its simply not that prevalent. You might get lucky and find something that works for you. But dont be disappointed in the beginning when you find yourself rolling out for 3 - 4 weeks before you can work your way back home and still remain profitable.

Everyone wants that local gig where they can be home every night or as much as possible. And for some it does work that way. But for most,.. they run a loop like I do and then work their way back home. For me I have a set number I need to NET before I head back home. It might come in 3 weeks,.. it might come in 5 - 6 weeks. Then I head home and take 7 - 10 days off to spend time with my family. Little mini vacations before I head back out and do it all over again. Everyone is different and what works for one person will not for another.

You'll figure it out once you get started. As I said,.. there is a large transition and learning curve once you go out on your own.

You want to get a fuel card that offers the largest network of fueling stations with the best fuel discount possible.

Truck stops have 2 prices. Cash price and credit. Its typically $.05 off for cash. I dont recommend carrying that much cash. Its easier to get a fuel card that will get the cash price at the pump,.. then offers $0.10 - $0.30 off per gallon. A typical fill up can be anywhere from 150 - 200 gallons. So if you take 200 gallons of fuel at $2.55 a gallon credit price, that fill up would set you back $510.00. If you had the $0.05 off for cash price of $2.50 per gallon plus another $0.30 per gallon discount from your fuel card,.. that same fill up would only cost $440.00. A savings of $70.

Fuel will be the largest expense for you. It effects everything you do.

Yep, like n Cheyenne Wyoming where the loves was selling fuel for $2.35 a gallon and the Valero across the street was selling it for $2.13. Lots of those clubhouse things are nothing more than gimics to get you in the door.

On my run to the springs and back, I do not get fuel in Colorado. Montana and Wyoming have higher taxes.
