    ok,
The majority i've seen... The real numbers will scare a person to death......

Im living proof that a person can survive and make a nice living for himself ( IF) he does it the correct way.

You all are scaring the hell out of those that could possibly do it the correct way and with the right Carrier.

But it's all in the way you are with finances. Poor money management will kill you and make you indebted to uncle SAM for ever.
CANT file B-Rupsy on uncle SAM.

    Now,
IF one wants to do it the correct way in my book ( buy ) a decent used truck thats still gotta little life left and ( OVER ) expense yourself.

ALWAYS assume your C/E or COSTS and expenses are going to run high!

FUEL alone for not just 2 trucks anymore but 3 is costing the Company almost and close to $1,600 PER WEEK! And thats a FILL up!

My truck payments are ( 0.00 ) per month. Unless the truck breaks... GOD which I hope not....

If you own Trucks and wanna do the business ( prepare ) to drive a truck or two yourself.

Thats kinda directed to a guy who posted in another Topic, who wants to KEEP his FT job and run a trucking Company without even knowing anything about the industry. BAD MOVE!!!!!!!! Dont have a CLD, DONT get into the industy and think your going to make moneys hands over fist.

We help our own. There has been 2 times that I know I had to call a friend to help ME ( myself ) get a load from point A to B do to a truck being a bit#@ and die on the ROAD. I picked up the phone, made a call and My friend didnt even ask for a DIME. I did when the settlement came in EVEN the thank you by giving him 60%.

ok ok ok, enough... I just wanted to jump in and say it can be done and done right. But it can also swallow you whole and take you into a TAX MANS ( HELL ).

It's a GAME! And If you play the game right... You'll be allright....

Play the game wrong... And your DONE.

My TRUCKS and your alls truck shouldnt MOVE for under $2.25 PER MILE!

    This is a START!

    All the best,
    Matthew

    PS,
I may be young but Im not DUMB! So I guess now Im ready to defend myself and you all to when someone picks the crap out of this reply!!!!

I've Seen 2 or 3 users here that I can tell who have their ducks in a row.

I don't think I'm trying to scare anyone. But people should have a good idea of what they're getting themselves into. My spreadsheet that I posted is an accurate picture of what my expenses are.

My truck payments are lower than most people I know, but the rest of those numbers are either right on target for some known costs (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, XM), and padded in other areas to ensure I won't lose money.

I know you mention $2.25/mile is what we should all be getting. The problem is, in the real world, 90% of the loads out here aren't paying that unless it's a flatbed or permitted load. The big companies can negotiate cpm rates much lower than an independent, and then independents are forced to move the cheap freight that's left.

I run power-only. For the expenses I listed, it's not a problem for me to take less than $2.25 as long as I'm getting in excess of 2000 miles a week. For others with higher truck payments, that may not be the case.

You mentioned that you have no truck payment. For someone starting out, that's probably not an option. They'll be sitting with an 800-2000 a month payment for 2 or more years. You have the luxury of placing that money in a savings account for any problems you may have.

If you know where they're hiding all the $2.25/mile loads, let me know!

I've pulled a lot of flat bed and the loads that paid $2.25 were not common enough to suit me.
Lets be realistic here.... If you are running FAK (freight all kinds) you WILL NOT be hitting $2.25 on a regular basis. That being said its a great goal to aim for when pricing and negotiating a load, but not a realistic figure to base your business plan on.

That being said Matthews you had a good post. :yes2557:

Hmmm. Getting a rig may be a great way to lose weight. One won't have enough to pay for food, so he won't be eating much. Maybe what he gets will be from being a "free-gan" or a dumpster diver. It sounds like somebody is gonna be hungry with those numbers.

The majority DROP/Step/LB/ RGN Loads are paying a start rate of $2.00 PM.

If the fright goes lower than that ( we ) dont move.

The no payment thing is because I like to purchase USED / RETIRED OTR trucks.

( I myself ) would rather purchase 5 Trucks at $10,000 EACH than buy a $50,000 Dollar truck. But thats just ME.

I feel for those that have $1,500 / $2,000 Payments in the game.
Thats a $500.00 P/WK Expense. And you cant get out of that.
    I ( DO ) feel for you.

My equipment is not JUNK, it is those USED. Call me stupid and young but
like I said. When MID summer hits and fuel goes up again like last year I hope to have saved enough to BUY another truck or 2.

    I HOPE....

CHEAP truck, NO payments... Pay a driver a HONEST wage at 20/25% and he and I both are happy.

( I DRIVE ) too.... So just letting you all know that..... That means something to me and my customers.....

A few of my friends GOLF.... I myself would rather use a GOLF club as an over educated, Tie wearing pencil pushing CEO HEAD BEATER!!!!!!

Im from the old school... If you want things to WORK and work right you've gotta get dirty and not have a fear of work!

THATS where a few 60% of the people I've seen here are wrong!

If you cant give it all you've GOT then dont even TRY. And if you cant pay CASH money like $5 - 10,000 CASH money for a TRUCK? Dont bother.... These days.............

OTR guys, I think about the most... I honestly feel you... And I AM giving you ALL credit... But ( OTR ) is NOT by anymean's profitable anymore in my book ( my opinion ).

Leave the OTR miles for JB, SWIFT, and the other Big fish.... let them service the customers at a CUT throat rate.

The moneys for us O/Os are within 300 Miles of HOME!

Let the big guys burn the FUEL, ( WE ) cant afford to....

    My 1/2 Cents....

    Matthew

    PS,
I really think all us need to some day tell the Brokers ( hinst the word BROKE ) to kiss our rears because THEY are the ones who's hurting the Industry as well. THE MIDDLE Man ( TIE ) wearing GOLFER! Sons a COUGH, COUGH....

    Sorry.....
$2.00 to $2.25 if Generally Flat, DROP, STEP, LB Rates.... No kidding...
PLUS Tarp fee's ( IF ) we dont get screwed out of that!

Matt another good post on knowing your numbers. I agree that $2 a mile for a RGN or drop is a bare minimum. As for flat and step a lot of that doesn't pay that good on a regular basis.
How ever if you are running in a 300 mile radius I would hope that your rates average at least $2 a mile. All that loading and unloading every day was really hard for me to make money at. I took all the loads that I could get that would load like on a monday and deliver either that friday or the following monday for $5000 or better :D those were nice! as long as there was paying freight on the west coast. There is a lot of cheap freight out there, but once in a while a guy got lucky.

    Brickman,
I was trying to help those guys see an average base rate to go by and not move the trucks for any less than than $2.00PM.Be it mainly regional freight.

We all could expect to see no more than $1.30 - possibly max at $1.55PM OTR.

Local here we'll get on a day to day basis from Akron,OH to Cleveland,OH Area around $300.00 with not many D/H miles involved. If no backhaul the numbers average out round trip.

We can always hope the Carrier gets the trucks a B/H to either Canton,Akron,Youngstown, Mansfield ect.... Even to Pittsburg would be nice...
From Cleveland to Pitt's we're looking at $425 to start.

And sense we're a Flat division there is always something steel coming outta Pittsburg or off the river.

Akron, to CLE $300 then to Pitts for lets just say $400 even and a back haul at even as low as $250 back to Akron,or canton for a delivery the next mornin the truck still see's $600.00 Gross.

The way I see it that's FUEL for the truck that week.

PLUS: The truck's got fuel for at least another 3/4 DAYS! THIS is why I like getting the trucks HOME every day and staying within 300 miles!

    All the best,
    Matt

    PS.....
Im thinking about sticking a wetkit on this new truck and going into asphalt and aggricate with a good friend of mine.... Andy Idea's on this?:biggrin_2554:
