What comdata charges landstar and what they charge everyone else is different. I paid them 44.50 if I remember right for a Tn. permit and it cost only 10 dollars. You have to order those through a service.
Comdata is the highest I ever used and they aren't very good on routing. I do my own and charge the fee myself and keep the money.
You maybe cherry picking loads and getting those 6.00 a mile ones but average rates are lots less.
I've only moved 2 od ones this year as money hasn't been there. Glad somebody is getting it.

I would order directly from the state whenever possible. You are not going to get permits through a permit service for less than $10/state, and $15/state is a more realistic number. Most permits can be ordered within 10 minutes. There are subtleties to each, but its not rocket science. The only benefit to permit services is that you only have to enter the information once.

I ran my own authority for years and had a couple annual od permits. If ya run the same states all the time, check to see if they will sell ya an annual. This is WAY cheaper than permitting every load.

EVERY permit I've ever seen (other than an annual) was specific on routing, oal/oaw/oah/oaw, curfews, etc. This includes max. speed & flagging/lighting eqpt. required for each state.
A service is expensive...last permit session I had was $470.00 from Yuma, Az.- Charleston, Nc. but I ain't got time like was said above, to be on the phone. The service is well worth the cost to me. Have em email the permits and print em out in the truck. Done deal. JMHO

    edit;
There are books you can buy that tel all the requirements for each state. Sunup/Sundown times by date etc.
This won't "permit" ya, but will help ya plan ahead. Be careful as ALOT of citys now require a "city permit" even tho you are on the interstate. (Albuqerque is an example) No one is gonna tell you this other than a professional service, or the city cop that asks for one. Permit services keep me outa trouble.
    Again,,,JMHO

I forgot to add above but be advised,,,at least 2 states require you to have an "amber light" permit if you have or use one.
Nevada requires a permit (paper) for that beacon/strobe light even when its not on. If the light is up there, on or not, it must be "bagged" without a permit. They will ticket you.
Georgia requires a "sticker" (permit) on your windshield if you use the light. If it's not being used, it can be up there without the sticker.
Ga. will not sell you that sticker at the POE.

If your just getting started running OD,,,thought ya might like to know this.

How do you guys handle getting your permit when you're out on the road.

Do you have them fax to you somewhere Or do you do it and have them emailed to you? If you have them emailed is it good enough to have it on your computer or do you have to have a printer and print them out.

I use a Canadian company called Nova Permits. They are great. At $35/permit they ain't cheap, but I often call them up when I am bidding on a load to bounce potential routes off them and ask them questions about curfews and stuff. The think I don;t like about ordering from each state myself is that I have to fill out a different form for each state. With a permit service, I fill out one form and I'm done. That is a huge time saver.

$35/state seems very expensive unless you are doing heavy haul.
