A container that is retired by the leasing company.

Why might a carrier add an “off hire container” fee?
-
Sorry, I don't know.
-
Depends where you have to return it.

The Off-Hire Clause. ... Basically, the off-hire clause gives the charterer of the ocean vessel a reason to not have to pay hire during certain times when the vessel is out of service.

I run containers also, works been really slow lately due to the flooding in the midwest. If the vessel your container is going to is not accepting off brand containers right now they might still take it but charge a fee I think. I am not 100% sure on that but from what I read that is what it sounds like

leased boxes come 'off hire' at the end of a lease period. so a steamship line may take on leased boxes for 2 or 5 years same as you lease a car or truck VRS one way or 'spot' leases where the leasing company keeps control of the box.
