Well yesterday we did offsets in the morning went on the road in the afternoon. Today my class went on the road this morning. Like yesterday I was paired with instructor George and took the helm and drove us to the fuel dock off silver star road. Then my two fellow classmates drove the business district of shader road. I then took the helm and drove around on silver star. Instead of going through the intersection, I pulled over at the kangoroo station. When asked why, my reply was i needed money for the roach coach. Well George said it was break time anyhow and we had a 15 min break while i went to the wachovia across the street.Well things went well and i am good on my downshifting and double clutching.
The road instructors there are: Brooks (he alternates yard and road), Brian, George, Felix and jimmie on the weekends. The yard ones are: Moses, Ray (he is the yard boss) and Joe (weekend yard boss). The 3rd party testers are Doug (head of training), Joe, Robert, Felix.
Ken,
15 started, only 10 remain due to permit issuses or financing issues. Btw, all trailers are 48's but I prefer the only 53ft Fruehaf trailer because it tracks well.

Guys,
Today went well. I spent the majority of my half day in the yard doing offsets. I a, getting better at it. I also confirmed my prehire with US Express and got my orientation date, 18th of Jan. I am at home and testing begins on Monday but classes begin on Sunday and I check in at the hotel on Saturday. I am requesting extra time for the yard as I a) have not done any offsets alone and have not started parallel left and right parking.
KHSpacecoast and JustSonny Thank this. -
are all of the companies that come up there to hire OTR or are there any of the citrus haulers? Oakley, Ben Hill Griffen, Chuck Young.... ect.. i'm just curious.

We have no recruiters come in. However, the following companies are hiring:
US Express
CRST (orlando area only)
Swift
Stevens
Covenant
I have orientation scheduled with US Express.

I'd like to edit information mentioned in this thread:
There are two 53ft trailers: A fruehaf and a ex Werner Wabash superduplate. The rest are 48ft. The yard trucks are blue and the road trucks are white.
I am going to let potential rm students know that you if you can afford to pay cash, please do so. It is 2K cheaper than financing. I know as a couple students who did financing could have saved 2K.

JustSonny Thanks this. -
Question, do they teach you how to secure loads in the vans with straps/brace bars? or is it all just backing, driving, pretrip, and logbooks? Are you ready to get back at it on Monday? and will you keep us updated with the "goings on" at US Express?

I'll probably get flamed for saying this on Sunday for saying this but DO NOT OPEN the trailers at rm. Ask any instructor and they will say do not open any trailer. The no zone trailer (something to do with points rm has accumulated) had rust chunks falling off it on shader road. They do not teach us load securement. I wish but per rm they teach us whats needed to pass the tests. They do teach how to uncouple and couple.
I will update as much as possibile and will start a blog about my new adventure. I do plan on going on vacation for one week after this.Spacecoast, kickin chicken, mitchtazz and 1 other person Thank this. -
wow.. that's nice to know.. is there anything even back there? like big ole lead blocks or are ya'll just draggin empty trailers around?
