I don't like the fact I am stuck when I do a 34! I know I am not suppose to drive but there is a Walmart right down the road seems to me I could just wiz on down there and grab some groceries. But noooooooooo I cannot move my truck!!!

I'm not tired or anything right now so why can't I? is there any rule that says I can go off duty for personal use just for an hour? Really sucks when you finally have the time to go grocery shopping and you cannot do it!

Who needs 34 hours to rest anyways? I feel great after 24 hours......

According to the regulations, you can. Not supposed to while loaded but who's to say you didn't leave the trailer right where it is while you went shopping?

Yea I don't have a trailer at all! But if I move then this stupid elog thingy will make me start my 34 over again!!!

So you are stuck wherever you decide to take the 34. No fun! 34 should be spent doing laundry, shopping at Walmart and so on.

I wonder if you just completely log out of the system if that is the way you do it for personal use.

    dunno

I dunno. Logging out would work as it doesn't record anything unless someone is logged in. Pretty sure that's against the regs though. You should have an off duty (pc) option. That's the personal conveyance line. Mine has it but I didn't realize what it was until partway through this discussion.

You work for Swift? If so where is that line because I don't see it on mine unless I am just missing it.

No, I work for a smaller company that uses Peoplenet. I'm just pointing out that if your logs were set up like they're supposed to be, you'd have that option.

Its up to the carrier whether company drivers can use the carrier's property for their personal conveyance.

BTW... when I mentioned 395.16 - that was in reference to a future mandate for Elogs/EOBRs. If you've looked at the proposed rulemaking for that equipment, its quite a bit more restrictive than what Peoplenet provides.

I know, I pointed that out. With nothing really being settled, we can't tell how this is going to play out just yet. For now, elogs are running off the existing rules. If they can't do what the existing rules say you can do, then they're not set up right.

I don't know if this will help, but when I was running with Werner, I could request Personal Drive Time through dispatch. The rules as I understood them were that I couldn't be under current dispatch, or use Personal Drive Time to manuever the truck to pick up a new dispatch. In other words, all "work" related driving had to be logged on line 3. However, I could deadhead home for hometime on Personal Drive Time, sometimes up to 500 miles due to location and the dedicated account I was on. I'd call your FM and see if Swift has something similar.

Bear in mind that they may deny you just to save fuel, also. Driver running truck for personal errands burns fuel that could be used to haul freight.
