I have herd of the Ohio DOT going into rest areas and service plazas for inspections. They will wake up the driver and asks for logs and usual paperwork. First question Do you have to answer the door if you are Off Duty. Second when you sit in the drivers seat to give the requested items the also cite you for HOS violations because you are behind the wheel and in control of the vehicle. IS this legal? Has anyone fought this in court.

I have seen them in these areas but I haven't heard of them knocking on your door. I know the rest area near exit 111 on I 75 was closed and they liked to sit there

If you are off duty with the curtains pulled don't answer the door. Remember that 24/7/365 you can be inspected by DOT.

never seen it, but hearsay has it that if you answer and sit in the driver's seat, they'll consider you on duty. No way to tag you for it unless your logs are really messed up.

Me, if the curtain is closed, I'm not answering unless I hear "Police"

I knew that most of the States Governments were broke, but I didn't think that they were that "hard up" to go knocking doors in the middle of the night.

Even then you should exercise caution, especially in CA. the Mexican drug mobs have been impersonating LEOs for a while around here to get people.

yeah - gangs all over have been doing that for years.

and no, I'm crazy, not stupid. If it even has teh faintest whiff of WTF, I'm calling 911 before I ever open the curtain.

Best advice if you are ever woke up by the leo's and they will not leave just hop in the jump seat and roll down that window and explain that you are on your required break and you will not get them anything untill the break is over.

If they have a problem with that tell them to call the dot.

If you are in the jumpseat you can log that as off duty.

I had a girl knocking on my door the other night. I'm not sure but I have a sneaking suspicion she was not from the State Government.

Yes they sit in rest areas, but I have never heard of them waking anybody up to check stuff, they might get you as you get there but I doubt they would ever wake you up unless you were parked illegally. Ohio troopers are not the bad guys everybody makes them out to be
