If you're running short intervals 10,000-15,000 miles under normal conditions (not excessively idling) there's really no need for spending extra for TBN. I sample every oil change as routine maintenance and my OCI's are 12,500 miles.

Now if you're running 25,000 mile or 50,000 mile or greater intervals you need to be keeping an eye on TBN and maybe sample halfway through that 25,000 mile interval until you get a good baseline going on that engine.

I just bought my 2013 Freightliner Cascadia. I haul reefer from Michigan to texas. Weekly I put approx 3000 miles. Im planning to change oil on every 15000 miles. I am not gonna put 20k.

If you are driving a modern truck do not forget to change the oil centrifuge filter.

I do mine every 20-25k. It would depend on your manufacturer oil drain interval. If it’s only 20-30k, maybe check it every 15k. The interval on my truck is standard at 50k and I’ve added the bypass. I check every 20k to see how long I can extend the oil without causing damage.

I’m pretty sure, even a 2013 Detroit, uses 10w30. If it’s a Cummins, I’d stick with a 15 or 10w40. If your motor has had 15w40 its whole life, you may have some increased oil consumption for awhile after switching to a lighter oil but will level off.

High silicone could come from silicone based sealat, if you got some repairs done recently on engine components coming in contact with oil.
