You a standard oilfilter.
There is also sometimes a spinning or rotary oilfilter.
That one is very good at removing particles from oil without clogging up the filter.

DD15 engine is now recommend 50,000 miles in manual. The catch is the DD15 has a built-in bypass oil filter. So you can add a bypass filter to the ISX and clean a the soot out of the oil. Then the oil does not need to be changed as much. Driver with OPS by pass filter can go 100,000 miles without changing oil. They take oil sample and see how the clean or dirty the oil is then Chang it.

I get my oil analyzed at blackstone labs. I've done my personal truck several times and it's very good at telling you the condition of your engine through your oil. If you have any questions, they are the best at explaining anything to you. I plan on doing my Pete every 12,000 until/when I get a oil bypass. Even then I'll change the filter at the same interval. OIl change is cheap insurance in my opinion. Yeah the oil could still be good and it might be a waste, but it's cheaper than a new engine. Again, just my opinion
blacklabel, Lepton1 and cnsper Thank this. -

You all are worried about pennies. If I changed my oil once a month at a cost of $200 per change and if I were to double my interval, I would save $1200 for the year. That amount will not change my life one bit. Peace of mind is worth more.
Work on getting your rates higher.
Now for a company like Swift with 16,000 trucks on the road, thar equates to over 19 million dollars. You can see why they would extend the intervals.
Me? I am sticking to 12k intervals. Until I hqve 16,000 trucks on the road...lolblacklabel, hellpatrol, Short Fuse EOD and 2 others Thank this. -
Bought the truck little over a year ago in missouri. I drove out to get it and brought it back to NY. I had said I wanted the oil changed before I picked it up. 1,200 miles later I had it home and changed the oil myself. I had the oil sent off for analysis. It came back and I was shocked. I called blackstone and the women explained everything. My iron was supposed to be at 24 (ppm I believe) but it was at 144. I figured the engine was going to grenade itself soon. She told me IF the oil hadn't been changed, then it was probably 15,000 miles old. Well that was better than and engine meltdown. I changed the oil every 3,000 miles. Sometimes 1,500. I went for the expensive ones and all that. Each oil change was sent off for analysis and the iron was dropping-a lot. I also found out that the expensive synthetic wasn't doing anything for my engine. I now run Valvoline through it, which is recommended by Cummins, and a oem filter. I change my oil every 7,000 miles and my iron is down to 17 ppm. I also ran it up to 10,000 miles just for a test and the iron was only at 20. There is other information on there, but I can't remember their numbers. It was the iron that sticks in my head.
My point is this: I found out the health of the engine, also that the clowns never changed the oil. They calmed my horrible fears and we talked about a plan of action. I did it and they sent me the results. Now I know the engine is very healthy and I don't need to run all the expensive junk in it to keep it that way. Great peace of mind for a $28 oil analysis
