I'll be coming up on a year in September as a water hauler (fresh, production, and service work) in the bakken. I'm considering after being with my company for a year or two switching to oil or natural gas or propane. What are some of the pros and cons of this move? I've got a pretty decent deal where I'm at but I'm tired of having to do 75 percent of my own truck repairs and maintenance and fixing other drivers trucks especially for only 24 an hour and no time and a half. We do have pretty decent housing though (two people to a 3 bedroom trailer.) I'm definitely looking to make more then I am at the moment. I seem to average 1500-2000 a week averaging 10-17 hours a day 7 days a week. Any advice? I'm not necessarily looking to hop ship anytime soon but as you all know the grass always "looks" greener on the other side.

Is that really all that you are making with your own truck in the oil field? I see that you said that you're hauling water, but really?? I would have thought that the pay was way better for an owner operator. Not trying to knock ya or the gig your on. I just honestly thought there was better pay in the oil field. Check the web my friend (CL) There are all kinds of jobs popping up for the fields but I could not personally tell you which is better or not. I just sent in an application to haul sand as a company driver. Gonna sell my day cab and try something different for a change. Wish you the best and let me know if that grass is greener!

Got ya. My bad pal. I thought you were an owner operator. Guess that money is not bad but I'd prefer to make in a 5 day work week. I'm a little greedy! How is it out there? I'm looking at hauling sand and I guess a stepdeck or flat is what I was told as well. Northwest Logistics if they ring a bell.

I'm currently on my way back to North Dakota from some home time in Iowa. Just got to Watertown South Dakota. The oil company we work with just brought back a drill rig and frac crew and more work over rigs. Their punching like 40 wells this year and we're picking up most of the fresh and dirty water work so we're going to be running hard this year. We weren't able to raise our rates any though. Hopefully we'll be able to later this year though.

Well good luck pal and be safe. From what I'm earing and seeing is that it's starting to crank back up. I may be heading to Texas to get my feet wet. Sounds like a decent deal with all the benefits and perks.

I was looking at jobs in Texas. Most ads were at 15-22 an hour. I can make 18 an hour driving for FedEx and be home every night. So I decided that Texas wasn't for me. I like the bakken but I'll have my house and car paid off within a year or two and if I'm not making more by then I'll probably come home and run grain or asphalt locally and figure out my next move then. I'm not real interested in running over the road. My girlfriend and I wanna have a kid in two to three years and there's no job worth giving up time with my kid.

I completely understand that pal. We have two young ladies at home now ages 11 and 15. I missed a lot of my oldest daughters life when she was a little tyke but have been home for almost 5 years now. Just to the point where a wanna make a good chunk of coin now so I can slow down and enjoy life a little more in a few more years. When you do have kids, enjoy it when they're young. They grow up fast. Way fast!!

My girlfriend has a 3 year old son from a previous relationship and is raising a 1 year old girl from a friend of hers. We're currently working towards full custody of the girl but I treat them both as my own. Once we decide to have one or two of our own I'll come home for good. I definitely want my house paid off and such then I'll be home for good.
